I got a 2010 MBP with SATA2 controller. Obviously I realize I won't benefit much from the interface improvements, however, it should still be better performing than a regular 7200RPM 1TB HD, right?

Putting a $450 SSD in an old laptop is a waste of money IMO. You should just save up the extra $800 and get a new computer.

Third party SSDs also don't get TRIM support in OSX. Generally it's not a problem, but I'm a perfectionist so it's a deal breaker for me.

Currently have 2 SSDs (250GB each).

Also, my MBP is high end - i7 2.7Ghz, Quad Core, 8GB RAM. With about 20 plugins loaded, it hums along like a champ. I wish I could still buy a 17" MBP and retain some upgradability I currently enjoy. though, having a SATA6 controller would have been nice. I might get the Mac Pro when it becomes available, though.

I also have a pretty beefy custom-built Intel box that I put together and could potentially load up with Windows 7, however, I'm not very eager to go back to Windows, even though I feel more comfortable in Windows than I do in Mac. I'm just little spoiled by lack of glitches with my Mac in the last 3 years...

While I'll agree $450 is too high, I cannot tell you the new lease of life that SSD's have ejaculated in to both my ASUS laptop and 2008 imac.

My 2010 ASUS had a 7200 rpm drive in it, and switching to the SSD (intel 520) changed everything. Like having a brand new computer. Absolutely every task that was either drive or CPU heavy suddenly became a matter of seconds where before they had been minutes.

My IMac 2008 was the same if not moreso. SATA2 speeds as a max but the difference over the stock hitachi drive was incredible.

I went for a Samsung 840pro in the imac and it's been flawless. I couldn't do a Intel as the best models available at the time had incompatible controllers so you'd only get a negotiated link speed of SATA1 regardless of the drive spec.

For OSX if you're really worried about TRIM (and I'm not, I've heard arguments both ways) then just get the free app Trim Enabler.

My advice: get a 256 or 512 drive from Samsung. Won't set you back more than $300 and will make you look at your MBP like it's Christmas morning and the girlfriend has a present she wants you to "open upstairs in the bedroom"

Hardware is so powerful these days that even with a 3 y.o. laptop your CPU should be able to handle a vast majority of today's software.
