Harmonic mixing

I'm quite interested in harmonic mixing as I have quite an extensive musical background (I'm actually DJ Dowlz A.Mus.A. if that means anything to any of you out there). I was wondering if anybody knows of a program that can automatically detect the key of a piece? I've sat down at the piano and worked out the keys of several of my vinyls, but really I can't be stuffed and it would be a lot easier if a computer program would do it for me.

Also, another suggestion. Perhaps we could start a trance harmonic database?

*sigh* use the search!!

I will save DJ Flesch the trouble:

http://www.djprince.net/

that's the best site for learning about it. they have tools, a database, and everything else..

that said, i DO think we should start our own trance addict Database for keys of songs.

Ahhh thank you ever so much. And yes I did do a search, but the reason I posted was to ask if there were any other special programs that people recommended and also about the database. But anyway, thank you once again.

no prob man..

at least you didn't do what some people do, and get all indignant about it..

cheers.

so.. maybe we should start a new thread, Trance Addict Harmonic Mixing Database.

we could probably start by "borrowing" what's trance in DJ princes database.

if we ask nicely, he might even share the raw database with us.

hmm....

didn't we discuss this already?
doesn't the key of the song change when you change the pitch anyway

so unless you know what key you changed the pitch to, then wouldn't the whole key thing be useless?

at least that's what i think was written last time...
i could be wrong

When you change the tempo by +3%, it increases the key by one semitone ... as a general rule. You use that as your new key. You can also make fine adjustments if you have a DJM-500+ mixer (the pitch controller).

Well, I can certainly help in working out the tonality of some songs. I'm not certain if you know about this stuff, but I have something called "perfect pitch" (do you know what that is?). Anyway, it might become useful if we're to work out the keys of more intricate pieces.

yes, i know what perfect pitch is. unfortunately, i don't think i have it.

but, i can tell pretty well what pitch songs are in.

I sent DJ prince an email about maybe sharing his database with us. I will let you know when he gets back to me.

I have database programming skills, and would be interested in developing an application or giving whatever help i can to get this started.

I went to DJ princes DB and searched for trance and only came up with a few hits:

Art Of Trance Breathe cygnus X Remix 133 Abm
Art Of Trance Madagascar ferry Corsten Rmx 137 Bm
Art Of Trance Madagaskar Ferry Corsten 137 Eb
Art Of Trance Madagasga original Mix 139 Bm
Braxton, Toni Spanish Guitar nyc Trance Mix 130 Em
Braxton, Toni Spanish Guitar nyc Trance Mix 130 Em
Clivilles, Angel Show Me j.v. Trance Vocal 134 Fm
Jones & Stephenson Future Trance htxl 136 Ebm
Mcdowell, Robert Eternal Art Of Trance Orginal 138 Dm
Solar Twins Alleluias santana Trance Mix 132 Bm
Spears, Britney Stronger tranceformation 134 E
Tall Paul Rock Da House Trancesetters 136 Abm Hardhouse
Tin Tin Out Trance With Me Orginal 135 Fm Trance
Trance Allstars Ready To Flow taucher Club Mi 140 Cm Trance
Trance Allstars Ready To Flow atb Edit 139 C Trance
Trance Allstars The First Rebirth atb Club Mi 142 C Trance
Trancesetters Synergi Orginal 131 Eb Progressi
Trancesetters Roaches Orginal 138 Gm Hardhouse
Van Mullem, Philippe Magnetic progress Trance Mix 138 Am

That was all that came up for trance, but looking through his database, he has tons of songs that ARE trance, but didn't come up when i search for trance:

searched for Paul Van Dyk:

Members Of Mayday 10 In 01 paul Van Dyk Club Mi 138 Gm
Paul Van Dyk For An Angel Orginal 139 Am Trance
Paul Van Dyk Avenue Orginal 143 E Trance
Paul Van Dyk Another Way Orginal 137 Am Trance

searched for Tiesto

Balleric Bill Destination Sunshine Tiesto Mix 140 Dm Trance
Bt Dreaming tiesto Mix 135 Dm
Coast 2 Coat Home Dj Tiesto 140 Gm Trance
Delerium Silence dj Tiesto In Search O 138 Am

Paul Oakenfold Southern Sun Tiesto 140 Cm Trance
Sarah Mclachlan Sweet Surrrender Dj Tiesto Rm 135 Dbm
Suble By Design Sirius Tiesto Mix 142 A Trance

searched for Matt Darey:
Blockster, The Grooveline matt Darey Mix 140 Am
Blockster, The Grooveline matt Darey Mix 140 Am
Gigolo Al Paradis matt Darey Mix 140 Dm
Gigolo Al Paradis matt Darey Mix 140 Dm
Lost Tribe Gamemaster Matt Darey & Red Jerry 136 Em Trance

Nightcrawlers Never Knew Love matt Darey Mi 140 Bm
Nightcrawlers Never Knew Love matt Darey Mi 140 Bm
Tin Tin Out Strings For Yasmin matt Darey 136 Bbm

So, it looks like he has some good tracks in there, but with the resources of trance addict, we can make a huge improvement on this collection.

It's 5.9% to be exact. 3% is a quartertone, and most of the time you can get away with that when mixing tunes.

I'm confused. I've been to that site before, but I'm baffled as to your statement
