Right in the beginning they have some kind of atmospheric sound in the background, with different voices, sounds and FX like wind, noise etc. How can it be replicated? Using a pad with long reverb, just wet reverb from a pad or an FX? Thanks.

You've kind of answered your own question there, although in the case of the first link it's more about the reverb on the pluck.

Big room, average decay (5-10 seconds) a little predelay and it sounds a little low passed as well. Probably heavily compressed with a short release time.

Just experiment. And use a decent reverb.

Why would I need to compress reverb? Sorry, really no idea

Extends the tail mostly, makes it a little smoother depending on what compressor you're using. Usually you need to extend the decay time to create a long reverb, but that's not always the tone you want as it can get muddy/messy.

There are a number of atmospheric vsts at this site (rain link here) like wind thunder and more. They are free and really great for pad FX.

Add hi/lo/band/notch sweeps and the forementioned verb and compression as needed for layered etheral bliss.

How should I compress the reverbed sound? Insert a compressor on a Send channel?

compressing the reverb makes your signal drier the louder it gets which just reduces clutter. Thats the main reason people do it. Again automation seems much more logical but in EDM with the whole side chaining and that reverb effect you get , compression gets used.
