<REVIEW, PICS & VIDEO> Tiesto @ Create... Jan 25, 2014
I hadn't seen Tiesto since his Home Depot show in 2011, so I was a bit excited. Specially, since there was all that buzz last year about him returning to trance. After all, Tiesto was the Trance King and I will always respect him for that.
His big shows are all choreographed so he knows what he's going to play. However, at smaller shows, it's usually him free styling. This is where he used to really stand out. And here in LA, seeing him at a small venue is pretty rare.
It was very obvious this was a "small" show for him. There were no pyrotechnics, no singers, none of the usual Tiesto high end production work. It was just him in front of sold out club being Tiesto.
As soon as he went on, he started banging it out hard and within the first 15 minutes, he dropped the 1996 hard house classic Up To No Good by Porn Kings. Or at least some sort of remake of it. That got me excited and the crowd went wild. I remember wishing to my self that he would drop more classics and maybe, yeah, maybe play some trance.
Sadly, my excitement only last about 30 minutes as he quickly went full on POP! Yeap! I was getting ready to shoot my self and the energy went from 10 to 7. He would sprinkle the pop with some of his older, but not too old, tracks like Feel It In My Bones. I wouldn't even call them classics. If you must know, he was playing shit like Kid Cudi, Calvin Harris, Bingo Players etc. You know, your run off the mill "EDM."
When Tiesto went on and the crowd was "HOT" he seemed very happy and was even dancing on stage. Once he went pop, it looked as if he got bored very quickly. The stage was full of girls. Bored Tiesto, plus a stage full of hot girls equals a recipe for disaster!!!
You guessed it. He stopped paying attention to the crowd and started paying more attention to the girls. Just like he did at Spin in San Diego years ago. I'm sure some of you remember that night. SMH
So Tiesto kept free styling and I began telling my self that I should've gone to see Adam Beyer. In me, there was still a little bit of hope left. Than all of the sudden he completely killed the vibe and began playing DEEP HOUSE!!! YES! DEEP HOUSE!!! The whole club was just standing there like WTF? (VIDEO BELOW). Wrong crowd Tiesto. He looked so lost like he didn't know what to do. DJ 101 - READ YOUR CROWD!!!! Don't get me wrong, Tiesto used to also play house back in the days and I LOVE deep house, but back then his sets were more structured and had a natural flow to them. Saturdays set was all over the place.
Anyhow, he kept it up for like 2 or 3 songs and it seems like he realized that he fucked up cause he quickly began banging it again. This time he went HARD!!! The crowd went nuts and it got me happy. I knew that from here on out it would be an awesome set. Than all of the sudden, I began hearing some trance leads! I was like OH SHIT!!! TRANCE! FUCK YEAH! Just what I had been waiting for. Than BAM! Song ends and he walks off the stage!!! WTF? Some other DJ went on and actually kept up with the trance, he sounded pretty good, but I was too tired and decided to call it a night.
Sorry for the bad audio.
