You're supposed to think that people look horrible without make up/that the 'norm' or ideal is what celebrities and models looks like with make-up and photo retouching. If women didn't see these images and feel like shit about themselves, and if men didn't see them and think their women aren't good enough or they themselves aren't good enough for that kind of woman - the beauty/cosmetic industry and all of it's subsidiaries would be a massive failure.
You ever think about the layout of magazines? The first 30 or more pages are ALL advertisements, starring photoshopped models and celebrities, all cleverly (well not really, it's pretty fucking overt if you aren't a moron) designed to present a fantasy. The average person does not critically digest this information. Instead they look at this shit, and after 30 or so pages they think (and it's exactly what they're supposed to think) "Goddamn, I'm not good enough." Then you literally flip to the very next page and SURPRISE, it's someone trying to sell you dick pills, fad diets, anti aging potions, and whatever else you have now unconsciously convinced yourself you need to feel good enough.
Fucking blind consumerism. Yeesh.
