What's happening with Paul van Dyk?

Okay following Wicked Neo's instructions in the other thread I make this one
So keep it cool.

My personal opinion on Paul van Dyk is that he's a great Dj to see live, he spins all the uplifting stuff etc... to get the crowd going...
But if I may compare him with dj's as Oakey, Sasha, Joof, etc...
I miss something in his sets, and that's the lack of atmosphere, I dont wanna hurt the pvd fans here, but if I compare his sets another dj I can say his spinning style is shortest to Johan Gielen.
Where is the time PVD builds his sets to absolute climaxes?
He just spins all the uplifting (and well known) tunes into eachother constantly letting the crowd go insane (see the Gielen comparison?)
I mean I much more like sets with a "warmer" atmosphere and with now and then absolute toppers and near the end absolutely building towards a climax. And here's why I like some easier tracks (also progressive) at the start of sets, not just throwing in all the bangin track the one after the other...
I wanna take the Parks & Wilson ess mix 2000 as an example.
This sets just floods over from atmosphere and the last 40 minutes are just breathtaking with absolute toppers. (check this one out if you didn't hear it yet!)
I dunno how it is for other people but when I started to listen to trance I also preferred PVD, Ferry etc...because all of the bangin tracks played. But what makes a Dj great is creating a journey through trance music (northern exposure on top here) and that's something PVD lacks (no offence here, he's a crowd dj).
If I go to clubs here in Belgium and some residents play stuff (I take Atmoz as an example) the crowd goes absolutely nuts on the hard club tunes, jump etc.. whatever...
Ok The crowd goes insane so the dj is great would one say...that's why a lot of u like PVD (If I see him life I will go insane too, I admit) but the fact of creating an "atmosphere" around a set proves to be a great dj (for me then)
And there's why I'm not a PVD, Ferry and Gielen fan.

Hey! Remember I like the tunes they play but not the set

Don't flame me now, just think twice about what I said.

Uplifting stuff? He plays more progressive tracks than uplifting. He's not like Corsten and other "all trance" DJs...different styles. PVD is a dj that incorporates more than just trance music into his sets. Trance, techno, progressive and also breaks. Ofcourse you won't find him as appealing cuz he isnt all trance.

Never heard Paul play a progressive track. I call Uplifting tracks stuff like Flash Brothers - Captured, he wouldent touch that with a fishing rod. I say he plays Hard Trance wich alot of people love and his mixing skills are very very good. His music doesnt appeal to me but i dont mind listening to him, although i wouldent play his sets out of choice.

I must add for all i am slightly going off Tiesto now the best journey i have ever been one has to be his Amnesia Set Broadcasted on Galaxy Mix Masters.

The problem is he's too random, capable of playing a blinding set, then capable of playing the most offensive array of shit you can ever hear. I don't think he's building his sets too well ATM either, a lot of people have said he's just mixing random tunes, which isn't like him and is reknowned "journies". Hopefully he'll pick himself up
on a side note, I think you should add Guy Ornadel to your list, he absolutely rules, his sets are amazing, mixing perfect, one of the few DJ's that can actually take you on a journey

thats not true, he's one of few DJ's that have made me stand still on a dancefloor and shout "what the fuck"
Others include Talla playing Darude - Sandstorm

thats because 99% of the time his atmosphere is created by his fans being in great amount and possessing a high degree of "patriotism". hence its usually created them, and not by pvd, thus if you are not a great fan of pvd it sometimes difficult to feel the "atmosphere" like the others who are creating it.

I think a lot of people critique DJs to their recorded mp3 sets. Keep in mind Paul or any other DJ is not spinning for our direct enjoyment but those in front of him. Another factor to keep in mind is these radio sets are abridged versions of a longer set. Anyone who has seen Paul play a 4+ hour set will know Paul does spin a lot of upbeat non-trancey progressive tunes. I've been to 6-8 hour PvD sets at Twilo and I can absolutely tell you it's very very progressive in the beginning. Then a few trance tracks and then back to progressive. The only time when Paul goes to uplifting is the last hour.

If you want to hear progressive, listen to Paul's Love From Above set part 3 (12-07-02). Most people have the uplifting first half of his set but not the 2nd or 3rd.

I reckon Oakenfold has that problem the most.

I seen PvD at Glasgow Green couple of years ago, 80% of the tent was just scallies that didnt know feck all about tunes. and PvD was mint, the whole place was loving it.

But when ive seen him in England its like what you said. its the crowd that make the buzz. So what I mean is I have actually seen him create an atmosphere on his own
