Actually last 4th of July I tried an egg, and it did work...but it exploded once and got all over about 20 people. I've tried water balloons and tennis balls too.

Search on the net for a "potato gun" and u'll get blueprints to them and all. All u need basically is some PVC pipe, some type of ignitor (like one off of a grill) and some flammable spray (hairspray, WD-40, etc).
