"Epic trance" = ???

When people use the term 'Epic trance' what are they referring to? When they give examples, all the examples tend to be songs with outstanding melodic lines, and average-standard percussion and bass use. So what exactly do they mean by the term 'epic', is it describing a type of song which has an incredibly melody which is memorable and also very uplifting?

Ah so it seems to have more to do with the impact of the song on the listening audience, like how much they end up appreciating it and globally knowing of it, rather than a technical description of the song's architecture...

Well said Mikey Mike!

Basically, Epic Trance is pretty much Melodic Trance or Uplifting Trance or Euphoric Trance etc.
But with time people started taking only the most epic, the most atmosheric, mood lifting and shifting tracks of these to call them EPIC... But as you probably know, this is something that varies from person to person, so, yes, "Epic Trance" is more of an impact definition.

Personally I think it has much more to do with the structure, the length and the production of the tune... epic trance tunes are always these mammoth tunes which go on for well over ten minutes and have a lot of variation in the melody and in the mood of the song... just listen to Sunday Club's Eterna's Flight and you'll know what I mean...

Epic = memorable
Tracks that are set to be classics, they're maybe not the best tracks for YOU (or me), just everything around it, the hype, the mainstream, the dj's who spin it, the videoclip.
Iio - rapture is an epic tune (maybe not the best example but this one is an epic tune)

Better examples are:

Push - universal nation
Sasha - xpander
Bedrock heaven scent
Space Brothers - shine
Cass & Slide - perception
Rank 1 - airwave
...

Actually tracks that everyone knows because they were very hyped that period and were set to become classics.

Like Kirby said....

I think Epic trance have more high end sounds. Like more on the top 2 EQ's then the bottom 2. If it's uplifting and melodic with a build, it's epic.

Like most genres, it probably varies for each person. My definition of epic would be a combo of melodic and uplifting. Really if it's one of those songs where you just have to close your eyes and say wow.
