ok this may be a dumb question but i am relatively new to djing...

can anyone tell me if people frown uppon changing the pitch of a song to make two songs fit together sonically? i am not talking about the pitch shifter on the tables but like one that comes on a pioneer djm-600 mixer or soemthing....

when i have two songs matched beat wise, sometimes one song is out of key, even though i know that the melodies and chord structures will complement eachother really well if they were in the right key. even basslines sometimes make an awkward harmonic when i try to mix them togehter even though the rest of the song would fit theoretically.

so if i used like a pitch shifter on a pioneer or somehting like that to make a song fit another... would some consider that "cheating" or soemthing? i guess intuitively, as i am shopping for a new mixer now, if it were more popular, i would think that most mixers will come with a pitch shifter or soemthing, but most dont, or do they? but i guess most mixers dont have beatcounters and samplers and all that jaz : \ [confused] can someone enlighten me? thanks

no it wouldnt be cheating, you can do this on the new Newmark ttx1. U can also do it if you have a djm500 or 600, which i do. I think im gonna try this out. Im thinking you would have to do the pitch change first on the mixer, set it to whatever you want the song to sound like, then adjust the pitch on the TT to match the beats. Now you would have a song mixing into the one that your playing with the same beat speed, but at a different key. It could sound really good if you do it right.

You normally don't need to do this because you would normally mix the intro of a track which is mainly bass and a snare or high hat with the outro of another track. Which may contain the melody. Because only one track is playing melodic (a section in a key) and the other track is percussive there is no key clashes.

that is true unless you have songs that have two bass notes and sound funny during a transition... plus i hate mixing just beats, it sounds too easy. plus i eventually want to get into sampling since i have 2.5 turntables [ups broke one and wont pay : (

either way there are some songs where melodies can come together and complement eachother so i can mix in and have the next song take over as on begins to exit, not during the exit.

granted, i am not good at it, but i always admired djs who could do that with tracks beucase i think it sounds great and it can often times be very subtle.

i dont have a pioneer but i was thinking about getting one, which is partially why i am asking this question.... with a djm-600, how does one handle the pitches of two records?

from the little research that i have done it looks like you just choose which channel you want the effect to...affect. so if i successfully changed the pitch of a second song and mixed it in...would i have to keep the effect on through the third? how does that work? what happens if i want effects on the third mix, or find it necessary to tweak that pitch?

bottom line im trying to figure out if that mixer is exactly what i need becuase if it isnt i was also loooking at the allen and heath or the vestax pmx-37 or something comparable with effects. any suggestions?

with the djm-600 effects box, you select which channel you want it to affect, either 1,2,3,4, mic, or master, then you have a dial to select the amount of pitch change you want and another dial which determins the level that the pitch adjust takes effect. Although you tend you get a gallop on the beat when you shift up. Don't buy a djm-600 for the pitch effect.

well im glad you told me that becuase that was the main reason why i wanted that mixer... right now i have a vextax pmc-06 pro A. pitch shifter was why i wanted a new one... and i also wanted mid controls, effects and a thrid channel.

so if not the djm-600 then what should i get? i was thinking about the allen and heath xone 32 instead of the 64 becuae i dont think i need that many channels... i like to keep things as simple as possble.. either that or another vestax of the same price range. any suggestions?
