Answer Code Request - Breathe

First EP on Ostgut from my favorite resident. Thought I'd post this here since these tracks have a pretty 90's german techno-trance vibe I feel. Obviously with a modern techno aesthetic but you can't tell me these synths in 4th Verdict don't sound like they're straight out of 1993. In a way the tracks are very reminiscent of his sets, a lot of modern banging efficient techno mixed with a lot of oldschool techno-trance-acid trax.

The 4th Verdict reminds me of LSG - Jillanity, mixed with The Andor Voyage. Loving this style, nice share.

Damn, The 4th Verdict is totally old-school Teutonic melodic-techno. No, wait, it's trance, just trance. Kinda wish the pad part lasted longer instead of such a long, drawn-out rhythmic end, but baby steps.

Still, be nice to see more of this sound catching on with the Ostgut crowd.

Pretty neat, too bad it suffers from overcompression.

That second one is like this --> " close to being a perfect record for me, if only there was that little bit more groove or some more pronounced or interesting percussion or something, as the melodic part is quite static. It's almost infuriating.
First one is a bit too 2008-ish though.

Angry

I can even prove it this time:

Totally from 2008.

So you just add some faint melodic touches here end there and woony will approve it as being completely-2013-approved-cool. I rest my case dammit.

Yeah, why is a full third of the running time a static percussive outro? Completely pointless. I feel a lot of these modern techno records have absolutely no structural ideas whatsoever. Definitely a nice 1993 Eye-Q vibe to the synths though, with a tasteful modern edge.

The second track seems very pointless to me though. That rhythm would just be extremely irritating after a couple of minutes on the dancefloor, and I can't figure out how a DJ would use this.

Ghostes is actually way nicer than Breathe (which is pretty annoying, as Jack pointed out).

Well, the idea is you throw it on for 2-3 minutes to give the dancefloor a break and slow things down and then go back to 4/4. These type of tracks basically fill the void that dubstep left when it became uncool to play. I've seen DJs play like 15+ minutes straight of breakbeat industrial techno though and it obviously gets really fucking lame. As I've said, I don't mind these tracks as a short intervall but any more than 3-4 minutes straight and I'll go take a piss or something.

That isn't a breakbeat, and that is the problem.

It's not completely straight 4/4 which counts as breakbeat for techno But I get what you're saying, I'm really not the biggest fan of these kind of industrial techno rhythms either but I think they're tolerable as a short interlude on the floor. Techno crowds generally can't dance to anything that isn't 4/4 so these tracks are really just a way of teasing people until you mix out of it and drop a big 4/4 and get some yells and fistpumps out of it and engage full stomping mode again.

I like tracks like breathe for the contrast they provide, you have these very harsh aggressive beats coupled with smooth ecstatic melodies. Much like how dubtechno tracks often take cold melodies and pair them with uncharacteristically warm beats.

I can see it making an effective melodic interlude in a more industrial flavoured (hard)techno set.
