Pensado's Place

has anyone ever watched pensado's place ?

I tend to watch when i'm doing piano exercises or something but I just find him really mediocre. I find that the rnb scene is just really lacking impressive talent. And this isn't a genre thing, a mix is a mix. Some of the guests are a little more worth talking about but like I just don't get why he is in demand other than the fact he is a nice guy. And by mediocre, i mean like just not an expert in his field. Kinda lazy. Just not someone that I find inspiring in any way. The shoe isn't bad, some of the interviews are good but I see his name everywhere and he seems like the kind of mixer that would teach at a community college. I mean he lacks the science understanding, he isn't a competent musician, his mixes , well i mean, they just sound average.

Basically, can someone explain to me what i'm missing. I mean there must be something. My theory is that he plays dumb, and does rnb because that is where the money is. I mean he plays really dumb.

To be honest, the black guy seems to have more information to share. He should have his own show.

i've been banned many times but i've never mentioned anything about actual engineers. The show is not bad , some of the guests are great, but his name is everywhere and I've watched him, and i've seen others, and he seems like he is still an assistant.

I watched it one time where it had a black producer on. He talked about using the first half of a familiar melody, and then changing the rest of it. He didn't seem so finicky about timbre either and said he would take a shitty timbre as a challenge.

Just a guess...

I like the show overall and it does teach newbs like me a lot I didn't know. I think the show is basically a commercial for him since the big studios are closing up and the prior big money / Def Leppard Hysteria level budgets just aren't there now. So he's semi-advertizing his 'business' by doing a niche market how-to show to keep the cash flowing. The how to aspect is just the vehicle creating a demand for his services.

Great plan since how many regular artists really know the big names, but want that service? I have noticed on a few ITLs artists that never cracked the top 40 so there's apparently a market outside the big names he's reaching. Also look for Waves etc to announce a "Pensado" pack a'la CLA/JJ Puig as a result of the show.

Ok, I challenge anyone here to produce a short original RnB snippet that can match the hits these guys put out. I think no one here will pull it off. The big test is I'll play any entrants masterpiece to my kids - they know instantly if it's cool and right.

It must be;

Original
CATCHY - instant big hit melody
Cool with street cred the youngsters would recognise
Superbly produced
ABOVE ALL - the GROOVE better be spot on or just don't even bother

I actually tried a modern RnB 2 months ago and failed, it's far harder than I thought it would be.

I'll post my effort up if I remember to.

Well, to be fair, that's what those guys do. I don't think a bunch of amateur trance producers failing to make RnB as good as them would say anything about their talent.

Then again I have no clue who these guys are. Just arguing the logic.

they mix first off. Thats all they do. And it isn't hard. Not the stuff they now consider rnb. I mean the chord changes don't exist, there actually is no groove, and i mean , you have to be an idiot to hear that music and not be able to tell you everything that is going on in about 10 seconcds.

And the only challenge would be to lower one's standards to be able to write something so bad. That is really the hardest part.

It is probably hard for you because you listen to EDM and EDM only. If you've grown up listening to 70s funk, it really isn't that hard in fact it would be like an actual rnb tune, dumbed down about 50 fold. Hard if you are aren't a musician, ya i can see that. But this new RNB isn't hard for anyone.

the problem with your challenge is that i already know i can do it so i need a little incentive to waste time.

there are a couple new singers that I think are talented: the weeknd, jhene aiko, frank ocean (not 100% on him tho). Im talking strictly vocals.

the weeknd is pretty original, jhene aiko too but what sets her apart is her voice, i find it lovely.

You should start a thread for this. I'd definitely be a taker for it, eventually.

they have alan meyerson this week

this guy is a legend.

i suppose this is kinda the people i consider inspiring compared to pensado. I mean what this guy does is ridiculous. Like you are watching and laughing and how good and exact he is.

I mean this guy does mixes 500 + tracks like most would do 10. He knows everything. I mean most people would not know how to mic a violin let alone an orchestra. This guy knows everything.

i mean he just makes everyone in that room look stupid. Its like comparing someone with say a harvard law degree to a highschool graduate discussing current events.

And he does reinforce RANN's constant rant about not using a subwoofer. lol.

He speaketh the truth. Not going to say too much about this but he has forgotten more about engineering that all of us (combined) will ever learn in our lifetimes.

It's fucking crazy watching someone mix in stereo on a surround system - basically knowing your brain can understand how the mix will sound when bounced to 2 channels from 5 differently positioned speakers and a separate LFE.

I don't think there's anything he doesn't know about mixing. I'm not joking. 6 fully maxed out protools rigs all feeding two 264+ channel digital desks simultaneously (in two fucking different rooms) and it doesn't even make him think twice about setup.

I've seen him mix in excess of 500 channels, for a cue that took 30 full passes just to be able to print the master.

What Pensado says about him is all true, and that's only really the half of it.

I kind of find it weird that Pensado and Meyerson are in the same room together. They're simply not in the same league.

I'd love to see Pensado mic Abbey Road S-one for a 110 piece Orchestra, while you've got someone like Williams or Newton Howard breathing down your neck. Not a chance. Meyerson? without even breaking sweat.

Pensado's place is about what Normie said - it's mainly to get publicity for him, but in fairness, the big name engineers like press as even they spend the most of lives in the shadows while others get the publcity so they're happy to go on it.
