To autotune or not to autotune...

Okay, so I'm not trying to sound exactly like T-Pain or something but when I record vocals it is tempting to get carried away with autotune. Do you think on self-made tracks using autotune (in a not super advanced music software, mind you) sounds junky or tin-can-y? I dont wanna sound cliche and fake, with autotune, but not editing the vocals at all just sounds so amateur.

Any ideas? Or funny anecdotes, those are cool too

Let's just say there's autotune done right...

And there's autotune done wrong...

It's not amateur to not overprocess your sounds...if anything, it would make you seem more amateur by drenching your vocals in heavy editing. Put a little reverb on it, maybe some delay based on what type of music you're doing. That's about as far as I ever go if I'm working with vocals.

Bahahaha, okay lesson learned, don't over do it on the autotune!!

That's a great point though, that over using it makes the music sound amateurish too. I think I'll give it a try but make sure I'm not too heavy handed Thanks!
