I'm not sure if people will agree with me, or flame me for this post, but I figured I'd get it off my chest.

I few months ago I was in the market for some new cans and was about ready to buy the Sony MDR-V700's but as a result of many posts on these forums -- many from the infamous Gluegun -- as well as the difference in price, I decided to order the Sennheiser HD280 Pro's.

These headphones are awesome. Top notch. Sound is amazing. Isolation is superior to anything else. If you're working in a production or remix environment, and you want stellar can's, then these are definatley something you should consider.

But my personal opinion, as a DJ, is that these headphones suck.

Maybe I'll catch flack for this, but when you're spinning you don't want to look like a total dork. These headphones make people look like a weird bug or something. They have a ridiculous design -- they look HUGE on people heads (not just mine). They're not as comfortable as they are cracked up to be, and the "DJ features" don't really do much except making travel easier. They don't fit as nicely on the head as the Sony's.

I'm not trying to encourage people to buy the Sony's, nor am I trying to knock the Sennheisers, I am merley trying to allow people to benefit and learn from the mistake I made of not buying, or at least testing headphones out at first before I bought them. If style matters to you, don't buy the HD280's before you've tried them -- you'll regret it like I do.

I own 'em too and sure they're ugly but they just sound so damn good... I mean it shouldn't really be of any concern to you unless you're gonna be spinning at some party or club or something.. but whatever.. to each his own...
If you want something with comparable performance and better "style", I say go for the Sony V6 or 7506 or whatever... they fit close to the head and are all black... nice and minimalist...

it's good to have more than 1 opinion, and HEADPHONES ARE PERSONAL, what is right for one person is not necessarily right for another, I do like the 700s but think they are nowt special, I hate the v6s and just about all Sennhiesers, but I love my MoS IXOS DJ-1001s. And I won a mix comp with them and many people go on about how crap they are, point made?

I was set to buy a pair of Pioneer SEDJ5000's after seeing them in a shop and hearing DJ Liquid rave about them. But after reading up on the HD280's i decided to give them a go. Looks didn't really bother me and i like the comfort and the fit and they sound superb for listening to music. But when it comes to mixing i believe there are other phones out there that are better suited for the job. The 280's get the job done but it takes a lot more concentration, effort and screwing around with the volume and PFL.

To each his own...thats just my experience!!

If the HD280's sounded the same as the HD25 or HD25 SP1's they would be brilliant for DJing!!

Yea... Hey, is anyone gonna try the Ultrasone HFI-650's, to compare them with a 'normal' dj headphone? Those might work... they are like the HD280's in fit and such...

I have to disagree with the Senn's being ugly. They are a lot closer to the conceptual concept of a "DJ headphone" than the V700's. The Sony's are everywhere now, and it's getting tiring to see one: "ooh you're a DJ, eh? What headphones do you use.. oh..aww"

This is all imho.

Though I must mention that doing one-eared monitoring with the Sony's is a lot easier than with the Senn's - since the Senn's cups are shaped elliptically, you have to really force your ear into it to get the seal. The Sony cups are round so it doesn't matter what orientation they go on.
