Ok, I got a copy of SoundForge 5, and put it on my office PC. I couldn't run my mixer into it, since all of my gear is at home. However, to simulate your setup, I used my minidisc player. I have a minidisc playing out through the headphone jack, and instead of running it out through headphones, I put it out through a mini-to-mini right into my soundcard.
After playing with the Windows Volume Control properties, I was able to record a clear .mp3 of what was playing on my MD, so for me, SoundForge wasn't a problem, I just had to tweak the Windows Volume Control to that happy medium where it wasn't too loud or too quiet.
Hope I'm not insulting you, I'll try explaining it. You can double-click the little yellow speaker in your system tray (next to where your system time is displayed). Select Options->Properties, select Adjust volume for Recording, and click OK. Now your recording volume properties are dislplayed. Make sure Line-In is checked.
Now throw on a vinyl, adjust the gain/EQs/channel fader on your mixer to the volume you're looking for. Now start up SoundForge and hit record. You can also open your Windows Volume Control properties, and lower/raise the Line-In settings while you're recording. Hopefully, you'll find the Line-In setting that sounds good.
Hope you can get this working I don't mean to sound condescending, its just easier to explain everything in detail from start to finish when you are troubleshooting an issue like this.
Good luck! |
thanks dude for the advice and the detailed post. But the thing is, I do adjust the volume and gains with all my gear and sound card, but the problem is when I set it too high, i notice that the recording clips when I record through soundforge. when i keep the volume right below clipping, the recording still comes out too quiet. Here let me explain better.
I have a Y cable, which I hook up the RCA end to the Rec out on my mixer to the Line In on my Audigy. I have the master gain on my mixer up all the way, and the gains on my 1st and 3rd channels (channels where my tables are hooked up to set to 75%. This works perfectly when I DJ in my room. I can turn the volume up on each channel almost all the way withouth clipping on my mixer. Anyway, I adjust the volume of my Line In through the Creative Sound control program and set it to 85%. I then record my mixs through sound forge. When I monitor the mix, my sound levels are consistently up high, but just below clipping.
After I finish the mix, I'll listen to it and the levels are always too low. I have to really crank up the volume on my computer to hear it. If I compare it to an mp3 that I have downloaded from a CD, the loudness of the Mp3 is normally twice that of the recorded mix.
I have tried cranking up the Line In to 95% to 100% in the Volume control on my computer. When I do this the recording clips very badly but the loudness of the mix is higher, but still not as high as any mp3 ripped from a CD.
I know I don't have a bad cable because I use the same cable to play music from my computer through my mixer. (I always just switch the connections of the cable for recording). Also the volume controls for the Creative Mixer which I adjust the volume on, is the same as the windows volume control.
sorry, this post is kinda long. It is a weird problem.
Thanks for all the previous advice and any future if you can figure out what i'm doing wrong.
