Joseph Von Xanten - Ad Finem Fidelis [Prog]

Ad Finem Fidelis means something like "Faithful to the End," and is a rather tongue-in-cheek joke at my own expense - seeing my obsession with this genre as a laudable form of faith, instead of whatever it really is

This mix is, in a way, a sort of elegy for old prog, and could be listened to as a type of requiem played during the funeral procession of the genre. Not that it needs to be, though. It's mostly just a mix of some of my favorite old tracks. Unless you want to be pretentious; in that case go for the elegy and requiem.

You will be able to tell that this was not mixed in Ableton and that I am not Digweed, but overall the mixing is serviceable, I hope. I had the overall programming roughly in mind from the start, but a decent portion of this was spontaneous, leaving some of the transitions better than others.

I didn't intend for this mix to be as long as it is, which is one of the downfalls of somewhat-spontaneous mixing, but ah well. It's shorter than some

All comments and criticism appreciated. Hope you enjoy!

I'm still working on the tracklist - having a hard time figuring out two remixes - but I'll post it in the next little bit. All the music is from 1995-2004, I believe. I didn't go out of my way to find unknown songs, so a lot of these will probably be familiar, but hopefully a good portion are more unknown - like the ones I can't track down the exact name and date of.

Edit: So, I think this tracklist is correct, but I'm still unsure about some of the white label unreleased tracks! Woops.

Joseph Von Xanten Cocks!

I'm all over this, of course.

Incidentally, I was going through some old stuff a couple of days ago and found a mix by "That Vegetarian Asshole"

This looks like a gigantic post Y2K "prog" hit parade. I think I've heard pretty much every single tune in this tracklist at some point, so I'll be more interested to see whether you've actually managed to mix so many big tunes in a way that makes for good set structure, not to mention whether I actually still like these tunes about ten years on.

A few trainspotting notes: There were a few whites of Corporate Entertainment knocking about, but nothing in the way of an official release. The Hybrid remix of Radiohead eventually did make it out as a download on Distinct'ive's website: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Bootlegs/release/567614

No shortage of millenial prog monster mixes 'round these parts. I've got the rest of this week off work so I should find time for this.

Hahahaha fuck you

Anyways, onto the review.

I heard a few fader slams but nothing that distracts from the mix to be honest. This sounded like more of a prog-trance mix rather than a chunkier prog-house mix. Not that I'm complaining.. I think after listening to my mix and then this mix you can definitely tell the two different but equally as good styles. I feel like you started out with more of a trancier vibe, meandered your way into more of a housey feel almost, then went back to driving prog to finish off the mix. I might be the only person who thinks this though but I believe this happened because of the spontaneous factor, not that I'm complaining! Long mixes really do benefit from peaks and valleys; it keeps them interesting.

This time period was so good for progressive music in general, because of the shitton of different sounds DJs were playing, all under the progressive umbrella. Admittedly, I'm new to the time period, having only recently (last year and a half) been digging through, so forgive me if I'm just repeating things already known.

Honestly, the only transition I found kind of weird was the very first one. That first track has such a massive pad I can see why it would be difficult to mix out of it properly without matching the key perfectly. However, you are better at riding the pitch than I am 100% lol. Gotta get at your level. Do you mix on your headphones or do you have monitors? The problem I have is that I always second guess myself when track B is 50% in, and I end up "correcting" the pitch, yet all along it was matched perfectly. So I end up unmatching it even though it was matched in the first place, thus making me match it again while it's noticeable in the mix. I think this might have to do with the fact that I'm mixing solely on headphones AND the fact that I might not feel fully comfortable around vinyl yet. It will take another couple of years.

Track at 49:00 is great and I love the transition into it as well. I guess I'm a prog noob because I didn't recognize 80% of this mix Thanks for englightening me. I also liked the breaks tracks that were littered around the mix. It kept things interesting. Notable mention goes to the the Tom Middleton remix of Utopia. It might be overly known but it's CLASS, especially first part

Other than that: solid mix, it will get a few more repeat plays from me in the future. Danke Lews

P.S. I was very close in playing Blue (Christian Smith and John Selway Remix) and Pixels (but another remix). However I didn't end up playing them so I'm glad they found their way into your mix!

Absolutely loved this mix, Lews... definitely one of your tightest yet in terms of smooth transitions. And the tracklist is awesome, a great amount of variety and some killer tracks.
