ideas to keep a cat off expensive equipment? (cat terrorist threatens my gear)

my cat loves to jump up on my gear and sit down or walk all over it. so he's ruined one of the channel sliders on my mixer and he's loosened up alot of knobs on my jp8000. recently i've caught him walking on my virus ti polar. he's a maine coon so we're talking about a pretty large cat... he's not a fat cat, maine coons are just big. he actually targets my music equipment, he doesn't jump up on countertops or anything else like that. but his fascination with putting himself on my gear is breaking the only belongings i cherish. he's a great cat, a really awesome cat that has a bobcat look to him and overall he has more dog traits than cat traits. i didn't know they made cats this awesome. but this fascination of his is very concerning. i can't afford to repair/replace these things when he breaks them. and now my virus ti polar is at risk, shit just got real cuz i use that on everything. it's my precious.

i put almost all my gear in a spare room and keep the door closed so he can't get in. i want to put all my gear in my bedroom, not the spare bedroom because when the gear is in the spare bedroom, i barely ever use it. i keep my virus ti polar in my bedroom, on a stand next to the bed because i use that synth all the time. i tried laying stuff on top of the virus ti polar so it looks cluttered, as a deterrent to keep him off it. that seemed to work for a little bit but now he wants to tip-toe around the clutter and walk all over it. i don't know what his fascination is with wanting to be all over my gear but he's breaking my stuff and needs to stop.

the reason why i want all my gear in the bedroom is because i have to work after-hours alot and i do that from my bedroom, where i keep my computer. that way at least my wife and the tv are next to me while i'm stuck having to work for hours when i'm at home and should be enjoying time off... the joy of being in IT.

i can't think of any way to deter him, he does what he wants. any ideas?

Oh man, I'm scared of my pup sneaking and knocking down my monitors via stands or taking ugly poo poo's on my synths.

The only way to keep cats off things involves either a closed door or aversion--the easiest is spraying water but obviously that's a bad idea.

Your better bet is to alter your behaviour. Keep everything in the spare room and keep the door closed.

my 2 cents.. the walking on your gear is an attention thing. I have a cat thats part maine coon/alarm clock and this all sounds pretty familiar. I'm guessing the only reason he does it is cause he knows he'll get a reaction out of you. My cat does similar assholeish things, they're pretty complicated animals. Basically more like a bitchy, needy dog. Only advice I can give really is make sure the water and litter box are taken care of properly and take a brush to him like every day. Keep him active too, when my cat starts talking a lot I burn him out with one of those feather things and he usually shuts up. Again it's just an attention thing, I think they get bored easily. There's also this spray you can get that's supposed to deter pets, you could try spraying the desk or the floor around your gear. I haven't tried that though

Our cat rarely walks on my gear, but I keep my expensive synths covered by vinyl/cloth covers at all times when not in use. It protects them from dust, spills, cat hair, etc. I get mine from DigitalDeckCovers. You can order them for just about about any synth, or they will make a custom-sized cover for you.

Here's my Virus TI2, Mopho X4, and Maschine tucked away and sleeping, safely protected from Dashi the Terrible. I also have a cover for my Kurzweil PC3X (just to the left of the photo).

I'm pretty militant about powering down all of my gear and covering them as soon as I'm done using it. The covers aren't cheap, but it keeps the resale value pretty high, and makes it easier to sell it when potential buyers see that you've gone to this length to protect your gear, throw in the cover as a bonus, etc., in the event that you ever want to sell it.

i came across a post on gearslutz asking the same question i did
https://www.gearslutz.com/board/moa...llent-gear.html

and somebody made an excellent suggestion, they said to cover the gear in double-stick tape cuz cats hate that stuff. a couple years ago we used double-stick tape on our bed's headboard because he's get up there and mess up the blinds, because of birds outside. the double-stick tape stopped him.

it seems like the perfect idea is to get one of those vinyl covers you linked then cover it with double-stick tape. i use cloth towels to cover my gear now to protect it from dust but i'll need to get a vinyl cover so the tape will stick to it. thanks for the idea!
