whats the difference between belonging to ascap vs bmi or others? (or your nations equivalent copyright collective choices)

I'm not going to write something like man on the run, just producing danceable instrumental progtrance is all i really burn for. Another thing is i've got an imprint i just love. It's a historic, down to earth label and i might be through searching for outlets for awhile, and just tuck into this current channel.

would i be fucking anything up by registering with BMI? I realize it's a service for my own protection, but these are the same Harley Davidson® Owners that dont let me post DJ mixes on soundcloud anymore. Please advise.

edit: fagits > Harley Davidson® Owners

I believe most of the major ones are invite only.
