You might be able to find a secondhand Golden Age Pre-73 I that range, or possibly a Focusrite ISA One, if you look hard/long enough. Joe Meek ThreeQ is a nice little preamp/channel strip that fits perfectly in that budget. Some people really like the ART Pro Channel II and VLA.

Good recommendations already, but perhaps the FMR RNP as well.

I was going to mention that one as well, but I took a look at the eBay prices here and was surprised to see how expensive they've become. But, yeah, if you can find an RNP in that price range, it's almost a no-brainer purchase.

Don't mean to shit on the parade but I wouldn't get too hung up on a expensive mic pre for a sm57/58.

I don't mean to be negative about it but buying a $400 mic pre for a sub $100 mic doesn't really make sense; $400 spent on a mic will get you a Mojave which even plugged in to your soundcard's preamp will sound infinetely better than a 57/58 plugged in to a Grace pre.

I'd save the money and plug it in to any decent soundcard pre, or get a better mic and then a better pre.

The plan is to use the preamp for better microphones that I can rent or borrow.
I am building a oldschool hip hop studio I need to record vocals and vinyl records.

Do you know of any battle DJ mixers that have a good mic preamp?

Oh really? I've seen them go for as little as £200 here and just assumed they'd be cheaper there
