sound distribution question

ok.. so i'm need to split my mixers record out signal to 4 or so devices... i'd like to have level control over each device and dont want to reduce signal strenth by using Y cables.

any reasonably priced products you can think of? i dont need a full sound board, just something to allow me to get a signal to the lights, minidisc, computer, and laser controller, and be able to match the level to the device...

sounds like you need to find a mixing board with 4 outputs...
i'm not too sure what else you can try if you don't want to have a mess of Y cables off the back of your mixer

You need a splitter, and those can be found quite easily. The first that springs to my mind is the Behringer Ultralink Pro MX882. It can serve as a normal mixer (8 in 2 out) or as splitter (2 in 8 out) or even as DI box. If I remember well the price should be around 70-80 US dollars.
There are other brands that have those devices, like Rane or Arx just to name a couple, but you pay more for them as the Behringer.

Splitters are probably your best and cheapest choice, but if you want overkill then you can use the Echo Layla:

http://www.echoaudio.com/

The behringer splitter that Dj Thy was refering to runs about $130 or so MSRP. These are also known as headphone amps/headphone splitters because I believe that they are mainly used for onstage preamps to headphones during live performances.

You can check out Behringer's product page here: http://www.behringer.com/02_product...?mid=2&lang=eng This should put you in the right direction. You may want to check out their instrument amplification product section, and of course, other brands too Behringer should be a good bang for your buck though.

Actually the headphone splitter is another device. Other levels and impedances, but I won't go further on that topic.

yes yes, headphone preamps are totally different.

i'm honestly supprised there isnt much out there!! seems very simple, and yes i'm starting to think I will bring back my electronics past and just build one. atleast i'd have some fun doing it... and it really shouldnt be THAT much work for what i need

shucks, maybe i should just market the sucker.. lol

That behringer is ok, but the XLR's dont really help me (i tend to despise XLRs, and none of my equiptment uses them anyways) - the vestax version has 1/4TRS which is perfect, but it's like $300 !! crazy.. dont know how they justify that, it's a really simple device and thier nice 275 mixer barely costs more

grr..

thanks for the input

Despise XLR? And may I ask why? XLR is the most used connection in pro PA audio (balanced), you are ensured the connection will hold, which isn't alway true with TRS jacks (the TRS jacks with clipping systems cost as much as XLRs). Hell even my Techs use XLR's now . It's not really that difficult to build or buy TRS to XLR leads, but I agree with you it's more fun to build a splitter yourself.

If you need some diagrams for splitters, I think Rane has one online for their SM26b

the main reason i despise them is the insane markups on the connectors and cables - just because it's pro doesnt mean it should cost alot more. maybe i just need to find a good mail order place for some XLR connectors that doesnt overcharge.

but yea.. i guess i need to get used to XLRs, they are not going away.

you make a good point about knowing your cable is going to stay put. definite plus!!

Well seriously, you don't really HAVE to get the NC3-FX/MX neutrik connectors. They are the industry standard, agreed, and the cost a lot, agreed also. But neutrik also has some cheaper connectors (forgot the model numbers), and they really aren't worse in terms of build quality, but they cost half the price. A real bargain...

And expensive? You never dealt with 8-pole Speakon leads do you?
