Soundcloud Genre Tagging

I have always been curious to know how the tagging works when you enter a genre on a song on SC.
Me,personally I just use a generic tag which reads Electronic. This is more of a personal choice to do so based on the disliking of categorizing a brand of music.
I am wondering now however with today's social media world if it isn't important to use a specific tag.
In essence it comes down to being heard, does specific tagging actually make a difference?

I would say it makes a lot of difference. The tags used help people find what they are looking for. If you simply tag it as "electronic" it'll get lost in the masses.

It's the same concept as a hashtag on Twitter. You can either search for songs with a specific tag, or you can click on the tag of a song you like to find others.

The uploader is still responsible for entering an appropriate tag though.

Unless you have 10s of 1000s of followers on any social media site then whatever you do is irrelevant.

I recall Soundcloud receiving 10,000 uploads per hour so most stuff just gets lost.

That's why I always tag my tracks with Deadmau5, Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Kenye West, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber,...

Seriously, though, looking at my SC feed, it seems like tagging is out, and having a profile image of some bootilicious bimbo shoving her ass into the camera is in.

Exactly Dave.....actually you and Tehlord are both saying what I am thinking. So, with all this bullshit,it doesn't even seem worth it.
I did a test on a crappy audio piece I did and made sure it was a crappy piece.
Matter of fact, the song was nothing but chopped up samples and had no cohesiveness to it. Needless to say, when it got uploaded I tagged it with every genre tag known to man. I received a decent amount of hits and likes from random bullshit people (or bots).
I then waited about an hour and went back and then liked my own piece. It seemed like that attracted more listeners in the next hour but then went flat. Totally funny to see the likes on a shitty piece of music that people probably didnt even listen to.
Following that test after the second hour I uploaded a piece I had been working on and tagged it Electronic...nothing, I simply got nothing.

I am pretty sure tagging helped someone run into one of my field recordings and he made a great ambient tune out of it:

I am not completely sure thats how he found it but I know there are people out there using tagging to make playlists, just going through specific tags and looking for songs they like. A few of my tracks have ended up in various peoples playlists that way (people that were not obvious bots)

99% of soundcloud is spam though, but I think categorizing your stuff is worth it for the 1% of the time where it helps people discover music they like.... You are not going to get famous on Soundcloud, but you might have some nice interactions on it if you tag your stuff accurately.

Just my 2 cents.

The thing to understand is that the community aspect of soundcloud is now totally dead. 99% of the people that use it are the ones that are too tight to use Spotify or don't have the mobile bandwidth to use youtube. They're all listening on their smartphones, and listening to what Soundcloud tells them to listen to.
