It truly is a sad day for the hip-hop communtiy. Not only did Jay bring help bring hip-hop into the mainstream, but he helped revolution many aspects of it aswell.

I dont think thats really a fair thing to say. I mean what about Tupac and Biggie? And all the other guys.

yah pac and biggie prolly contributed most...they werent really good role models..but they were to millions, to bad they had such short careers.

Not to be on your case, because I agree with you that he was the last guy you'd think that would get murdered in such a way. He was the nice guy of the Hip Hop community. But he was also pretty much the Father of modern hip hop. And if you've been listening to rap for 10 years, you would know that 2Pac and NBIG wouldn't have been around whatsoever if it wasn't for Master Jay. You hear his influences in the likes of all rappers, as well as other music flavors like 311, Kid Rock, Rage Against the Machine, and other rap/rock artists. He raised the bar that Grandmaster Flash created back in the '70's and early '80's, and then through in a flavor of scrathin' that was nothing shy of eye-opening brilliance. In fact, it's not a far stretch to say that his influences are felt in today's House genre, as well as even a little Techno and Prog. (that's a further stretch, but I believe a case can be made).

You think about the crap music that came out of the '80s. Sure, everyone has their favorites. I still love the old Smiths, Cure, Depeche Mode, and so on. But a lot of stuff is crap that's completely made fun of today, and what's more, made little impact on the modern music scene. Then came Rap. At first, no one here knew what to think of it. It didn't fit in very well, and the kids didn't exactly know how to dance to it, with the exception of the breakdancers. But it remained strong and continued to grow, and the catalyst of it all was RUN DMC. Master Jay's scrathin' skills were unbelievable, and what's more, they're still incredible. I'm even more heartbroken because Master Jay was going to be touring through KC in a month.

It is a sad day when anyone gets gunned down. But 2PAC and NBIG was involved with East Coast vs. West Coast BULLSHIT! They got involved a name-calling childish playground game, except the game used guns. Master Jay, however, had a wife and 3 kids, and was gunned down doing what he does best, recording in his studio. There's no sense in that whatsoever, especially considering his rock-solid character. You don't have to be a hip-hop fan to appreciate what this man has done to the musical genre (I'm not much of one myself). But as I said earlier, you're right to say that it is truly a sad, sad day.

Being a child of the 80s, this really was a shock for me.

I totally agree for what others here have said here about what RUN DMC has done for that gendre as well as breaking down some walls between gendres (ie. their collaberation with Aerosmith in "Walk this Way") which was revolutionary in the day.
Master Jay and crew were definatley one of the grandfathers of their gendre and I say big ups to them.
I really am sorry to see that happen.
It's unfortunate and I hope that one day, that community wakes up and realizes that killing proves nothing but sorrow, regret and grief.
