Cancer sammich

So, the WHO warns of the link between processed/red meats and certain types of cancer...yet I just enjoyed a turkey sammich. It's the Oscar Mayer "Select" turkey, which supposedly is preserved only with celery juice or some such. Food marketing folks are allowed to get pretty clever in the US, so I am sure I ate just as many carcinogens as I would have buying the non-"Select" turkey. Love me some turkey sammich...I just can't quit!

It's one of the things that I found, and still do, so difficult about the USA; They process the fuck out of everything.

Food marketing standards are fucking horrific here - We had a vote a little over a year ago which was purely about labeling GMO's and then another vote about salt and sodium content and both got lobbied so hard by big Agriculture that neither got voted in. The general voting public can be so dumb at times.

Things like "Selects" and Boar's Head "Premium" and "Primo Taglio" all pitch themselves as quality but just ask to see the labels on the actual joints - they're still all chocked full of shit.

Much as I hate Whole Foods, they're the only big chain that does truly non-chemical processed and treated cut meats

I think we've at least reached the point where public (govt/regulatory) interests and general consumer demands are causing the pendulum to begin to swing the other way. We still have a long, long way to go, however. Of course some foods will still require at least a minimum amount of processing for stability and shelf life, but not all 250 ingredients we can't even pronounce!

Also: Bear's Head advertising makes it sound like your sammich is SEX.

I've cut my beef consumption to a lean steak every two weeks. No more hamburger meat. I used to eat turkey or Canadian bacon as a substitute for traditional bacon, but I cut that too (it's been tough, as I love having a breakfast meat with my eggs). No more deli meats, either. Basically just stick to chicken and fish from the local market. I keep asking myself at what point am I going too far, though. I don't want to get too crazy about my diet, but I want to be conscious of what I eat as well. Polish people eat pork every day, especially various types of sausages and hams, which seem like the worst culprits. I don't hear of them complaining about cancer. So what gives?

I like to wrap my Camel non-filter in bacon and smoke after I've had a nice breakfast of sausages.

I tend to stay away from processed meats, and have done for years. Any ham I get is straight off the bone, and I have an awesome butcher nearby where I get nearly all my meat from. I eat red meat maybe 2 or 3 times a week these days, the rest of the time it's chicken or fish. That's probably still too much, but meh, I like lamb/beef/pork too much
