murder??

i wrote this on my blog last night.... just trying to see what peoples reactions would be. playing devils advocate. very synical...what are your thoughts?

quote:
could you kill another person? really...could you?

just walk up to somebody on the street and take their lives? you dont know them, why should you feel gulity for what you did. they were probably a total asshole anyway. but what about their family? fuck tham they were dicks for having raised their child to be that asshole. or maybe that asshole dosent even have a family...yeah thats it.

it all seems so simple dosent it?

just to clarify, im not trying to embrase murder if you will. i quite loath it. and those who do kill... i think some people will see what im getting at here.

Well, sure I could do it, but killing people for no specific reason has never been something I've been inclined to do.

Maybe I'm missing your point.

"Why not murder?" is a classic ethical question, I'd tend towards the moral rights approach myself.

As a rational human being I have a duty to respect the rights of other beings who share my condition. If I don't want somebody to have the right to murder me, then it follow that I shouldn't murder them.

As an additional to that, as a part-time Athiest and full time discounter of the prospects of "Eternal Life beyond this Veil (TM)" I think life is the most valuable thing we have because it's so limited. Because of that murder is the most heinous crime I can consider, much more so than from a religious viewpoint because I don't believe the murderee has any prospects for taking in the glory of heaven and all that fun stuff.

The entire paragraph presented as a whole is poorly written, and IMHO does a piss-poor job of making a convincing argument when compared to concepts like Dostoevsky laid out in Crime & Punishment, where he essentially said that people could be justified in murdering (in his instance) a rich, conniving bitch of a pawnbroker, who by living was making people miserable, and then in turn taking her money and distributing it to others, thereby offsetting the evil of murder with the good of improving several other people's lives.

I still don't think *that* argument is good enough because:

1) As I said above, this life is all I think we get, therefore murder is almost completely indefensible for me.

2) It's hard for anyone to objectively judge the value of another person's life, or to see the entire picture. Stated pawnbroker from C&P might have, in her old age, gotten a soft heart and donated all her money to charity anyway.

In sum, a lot of people are assholes, but that doesn't mean we should have the right to take the most valuable thing they have, their lives, unless we wouldn't mind having the favour done in return. I for one, currently value life, and as such, am opposed to murder unless it's absolutely necessary to preserve my life, and/or that of my friends *in a direct sense* (ie: someone is attacking me/us).

No i would not kill anyone. It is pointless. To kill someone at random is a mistake. I would never kill anyone unless they are trying to kill me.
