broken harddrive, self fixable?

I accidentally dropped my old harddrive, (containing some valuable things) and when I plugged it in. It seemed fine. So, I just left it there, and when I came back later, my system had crashed, and my harddrive makes the "whuuuuurrr.... click click... click click..." sound, and fails to be recognized by my computer.

1.) What is this caused by, and what is wrong with my HD?
2.) Is there anyway to recover the data by myself? (being unafraid to open it up and tinker with the parts)
3.) How much would it cost to get it done professionally?

Thanks.

Who's the manufacturer?

If it's Seagate, go to their website.

You can do a check of your hard drive and see if it's still under warranty.

They also have a special HDD diagnostic you can d/l.
It creates a special bootup disk to test your questionable drive.

I just had the same experience with a 6 Gig Seagate...

But I replaced it with an 80Gig
