Exclamation Wikileaks about to stir sh!t up again... and Julian Assange - Asshat or Hero?

sauce: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wor...em_potenti.html

The U.S. is already in damage-control mode ahead of the latest classified documents expected to be released by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke with the leaders of several countries, warning her counterparts of what the documents may contain, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said.

There is speculation that the documents will reveal sensitive and embarrassing details of American diplomacy with foreign countries, The Associated Press reports.

"We are all bracing for what may be coming and condemn WikiLeaks for the release of classified material," Crowley said. "It will place lives and interests at risk. It is irresponsible."

Wikileaks has not set a time for the release, but it is expected to happen this weekend.

Earlier this week, the White House began alerting members of Congress and foreign governments that Wikileaks was preparing to dump hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables.

The U.S. Ambassador to Norway, Barry White, said in a statement published in a Norwegian newspaper that the documents would likely show candid comments by U.S. officials of political leaders from around the world, AP reported.

In addition to Norway, Italy and Canada have also said they have been briefed by American officials.

"These revelations are harmful to the United States and our interests," Crowley said. "They are going to create tension in relationships between our diplomats and our friends around the world."

The website, founded by Australian computer hacker Julian Assange, has said its latest document release will be seven times larger than the 400,000 sensitive Iraq war documents it unveiled in October.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen told CNN he hopes Wikileaks considers the potential damage it will cause.

"I would hope that those who are responsible for this would, at some point in time, think about the responsibility that they have for lives that they're exposing, he said.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, transparrency in politics is a strange mixture. You may see some shit you wish you didn't.

i just think that some secrets are best left unexposed.

what do you think?

The power of a mere website to get some politicians melted beneath the collar is justification enough for me. It will be entertaining, to say the least.

Whose lives are at stake by revoking the gilded curtain? Whose interests? Certainly not anyone with nothing to hide, as much as I often hate that logic.

I say we bring back crucifiction.

I have no problem with this information getting out, in fact I'm all for it. However, I think they should change or censor some of the names of the people that could potentially be hurt if their identity was to be found out.

Wikileaks is basically doing what a functional media should be.

what bothers me is when the person who actually did leak Classified stuff to the wikileaks people, nothing happens to them.

improper handling of Classified material is a serious offense...doesn't matter what the material is...if you leak it out, there should be a punishment for it.

once it's out, then it's fair game i don't really care who posts it...but it's that original person's fault...and there should be consequences.

You have to wonder how many lives may be lost due to this info getting out. Now substract the lives this info could save. You have a net body count. Now substract the lives of inocent people that died because of reprecussions associated with this event. You now have a pure collateral count.

Do you feel responsible for these lives?

How are lives actually in jeopardy pending the release of diplomatic documents? That just sounds like pundit rhetoric.

I could understand releasing war documents about Iraq and Afghanistan. But diplomatic cables? Now they're just scraping the bottom of the barrel. If this were China, whoever leaked this information, would be quickly executed. George Washington executed spies and deserters. This is sedition. It's espionage. I don't know if whoever did this is a traitor, but they're pretty fucking close to it.
