Ok so I want to get into production, i've got lots of great ideas, a fairly musical background, Djing skills etc. My problem is, which bloody software to use to achieve the sound I want. Investing in hardware isn't an option right now since it's fairly expensive and I don't know if I want to make the investment while i'm Djing and spending tons of cash on records. Sooooo the choice is software. I've checked out fruity and reason 2, but now i'm seeing that there's much more to choose from. Buzz, Cubase, Logic, etc.

What i'd like to know is why use program X over program Y? Does one produce better sounds than another in some aspects, more user friendly etc.
I'm looking to produce trance tracks with a harder edge baseline, I love epic style synths, but when I hear a signum type track I go insane! My biggest setback is...well...starting with a program that can do what I want. Anyone in a similar position or get what i'm saying?

Its the man not the machine.

A person who is skilled in what their using will be better than the person who is unskilled in what they are using, whether it be $$$ cubase running $$$ hardware synths, or free ware buzz on a pentium-2.

Of course the learning curve is steeper for more complex programs, but once you master one program, and learn of all its ins and outs, possibilities are endless, and its up to you to make use of what yuou know.

qudda, you 'll need hardware synths sooner or later.. sure software is better at sequencing, I'm convinved of that. But i'm also sure that you'll need hardware to give it an extra edge. How do you make something sound good in reason or fruity? Right... the effect zone, reverb, delay, chorus, compressor, flanger, ....

Listen to a supernova or a waldorf q and you'll make things fat without one effect if you 're a bit skilled in programming.
And what to do if you're wanna go live? Depend on cubase running 20 softsynths? . Hardware will always survive because it's better. Just the feeling to see the crowd look up when you're turning those cutoff and resonance buttons the same time on an acid loop...

Besides, imho, staring at a screen and programming a synth with a simple mouse is BORING.

rahvin.. you've already got reason2, well i believe that's a good start point. Learn to make decent songs on that and you'll be able to work with cubase, sonar, .. also. Airbase uses reason as it's main sequencer I believe ? (correct me if i' wrong) No need to spend a lot of money for those progs now. Rather spare some money for a 2nd hand phat an1x, or a virus, or ... You'll go much further (imo)

Well, he asked waht software to consideer, and mentioned that hardware was out of the question.

You'll get good sounds out of hardware without having to mess with all the external effects, but having hardware doesn't instantly make you a better producer. I've heard loads of garbage from songs made by hardware, and also great productions using software only.

Live performance is another story.

So although you are right that you can get "better" sounds out of hardware easier, I still stand by my original statement that its up to the man, not the machine.

Rahvin... there's so much out there!!!! To find out what you like you'll need to try it all... reason, fruity, orion, buzz, cubase, sonar, and now even acid are all perfectly capable of producing pro sound. (And there's much more out there!) Personally I'm not the biggest fan of reason for several reasons, but the only way you can know is if you try everything.

u should use fruityloops with loads of vst plugins and samples. Absynth and fm7 r good vsts to have. If u get hardware u can use fruityloops as vst in cubase.

If U decide to go for software I Suggest that U just go for the demo verions of each one just to try them out before commiting yourself to buying one of them (Common sense really)

Personally I would suggest reason as an Ideal tool

well if your'e in the start blocks of producing I think you should stay away from programs like logic and cubase....i sat down with logic last night and just focused on learning it and running it with vsti synths....well I must say that it was ok but nothin more than that it fealt like logic is more suited for hardware...at least imo...

and another good thing with reason is that when you move over to hardware (if you do) you can always rewire reason to logic and make them work together...´so if you start with reason you will always be able to use it even if you upgrade to hardware later

I recommend 2 use reason 2.0 , 1. it can sound really professional 2.it has a larg amount of drum samples and factory paches 3. its easy to use and is very comfortable..

i REALLY dont suggest using reason, its just has a lack of options, once uve reached a certain level of production with reason u cant move on cause it limits u, if u start i suggest using fruity maybe and then move on to logic or cubase or whatever u want... dont use reason, anyway thats my suggestion...
