woony - august 2016 [warm, banging, groovy techno / house]

I've been wanting to do a warm, house-y yet still somewhat banging techno mix for a few months but the absolute shit wheather in june and july kept me from being in the mood doing it We've some nice late-summer wheather this weekend though so I had a go yesterday and i'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Musically somewhere between house, techno, techhouse and a bit of detroit-y fare.

Enjoy!

I'll have a listen. The prospect of non-gloomy Berliner techno is interesting, and I've been wanting to use that Steffi track somewhere myself.

Cheers! Yeah, i've been less and less into the whole dark and edgy aesthetic over the years. For the past two years or so, if we hear a DJ only playing that huge reverb kick dark pad kind of crap at Berghain we just roll our eyes and go eat some ice cream or something
I've also probably been buying more house and tech-house than ever this year so I guess this mix is a reflection of that. It was also inspired by seeing a bunch of these "digger" DJs or whatever you want to call that scene this year. There's so many good records and DJs coming from that scene but the classic berlin school of DJs doesn't really play any of it. It's also a scene lacking a proper club, Club der Visionäre is a glorified bar with a dancefloor that's ten square meters. I wish I could hear that kind of music at Berghain more often but the bookings in Panoramabar are like two or three years behind the times right now..

I feel like Clovis hasn't left CdV in a year, judging by his Facebook postings... Is it really that good?

I don't have much to say about the mix, other than I quite enjoyed it, other than two slightly jarring transitions (but you're on vinyl, so I'll forgive it ) and the fact that I didn't like the way you ended the mix so suddenly. Needed more of an epic end, imo. This felt like just a proper hour cut from a DAT of a good afternoon party, not a self-contained mix. It would have been a very good afternoon party, however, as the tracks were great. Probably my favourite selection from you.

Do you ever leave Berlin, or is it too much of a paradise there?

Thanks for listening! Regarding length, i've had a few people tell me that they find 90+ minute mixes to long so I tried to keep it under 80 minutes. Although I wouldn't even have known where to go after the last two tracks since they're quite moody and the last one feels a bit downtempo.

Regarding CDV, like I said it's basically a glorified bar. It's a really nice bar since it's by the water and everything's made out of wood but the dancefloor is as big a a "king size bed" (how RA called it ). The sound can be quite nice actually but it's not a boom-boom club system. But if it's packed, forget even getting on the dancefloor. I like the relaxed vibe though, there's no ravers chewing their face off waiting for the next dancefloor bomb, it's more like friends playing a few records, they never have timetable and people just play when they feel like etc.

That relaxed vibe and lack of pressure to "perform" has cultivated a whole group of DJs almost ironically playing tons of obscure, nerdy and weird old records when most people there don't even care about what's playing since they're just there to have a drink near the water.

I never leave Berlin, it's not that I wouldn't necessarily want to but I just can't justify spending that kind of money when I can use that to buy records and gear

I've listened to a couple of your sets in the past and not got far with them. This was the one I've enjoyed most. Your vinyl mixing has certainly improved from the last one I heard. The first half had a very old-school tech house flavour with a few dub techno stabs thrown in. The second half changed gears into some more Detroit flavours at just the right moment and the ending made sense to me - tripping it out nicely. I could certainly dance to this quite happily, without wondering whether it would make more sense if I heard it in a giant German industrial mausoleum.

I mean, that does sound nice, can't blame people for liking that!

Ah, yes, I understand - I feel that way about leaving London and cocktails.

hey man this mix was alright. a little too plodding for me but decent mixing for vinyl. i would've liked the tunes to have been given a bit more space to breathe and i probably would've placed the second last tune somewhere earlier in the mix.
