Years after digital synths, sequencing, and effects have become by far the most common methods of production for electronic musicians, the term "analog" is still used as some kind of Holy Grail description of synthesizer or recording sound. Does this synth or compressor sound "more analog" than that one? Do I need a tape saturator VST to "add some analog feel" to my tunes?

When will this obsession end? When all the synth heads who cut their teeth on prog rock or Jean Michel Jarre finally croak? Or will it ever stop?

Gearslutz should be called Gearcollectorz. None of these idiots actually make music. They all have $3000+ worth of gear and all they do is show off pics of it on a forum

The obsession will go away when digital actually sounds better than analog... which will never happen, so it will never go away

Its fun sometimes to read some threads in there (gearslutz), heh,, take some hits, and then I start reading some mastering threads, is comparable to the experience of watching a sci-fi film.

That's not entirely true. I've been a member there for years, have well over $3K worth of gear, and I've actually finished a song or two. I'm not the only exception.

I have been thinking the same also.

In movies, it's all digital now and when you look at movies such as Avatar, it looks much better than old analog films.

So why do we have not seen the same evolution in audio.

in my case i love the "analog sound" because it reminds me of the classic trance period. It's amazing how with less technology and less sound quality the result was better. Happens with all the human touches usually, really simple things such as meat for example i'm sure was more tasty 500 years ago.

I was over exaggerating a bit of course. I read a lot on the mastering section there - some really smart people who know what they're talking about there. But I mainly meant the EMI section though.

To me, the biggest problem isn't that people like analog gear. I really don't care that someone else is lusting over a room full of Jupiters, Moogs, Andromedas, or front-end gear, etc. There is a certain mystique and sense of quality to many people regarding analog gear, and I can understand that. Generally speaking, analog gear is well made, so it is usually synonymous with quality, but I think that many people have a natural tendency to over-extend that perception when it comes to its sound. So, the bottom line for me is that if other people want a room full of analog gear, regardless of whether or not they're creating music with it, who am I to question it?

What annoys me is the constant debating over the supposed superiority of analog over digital sound. Blind tests show over and over that most people can't tell the difference and, once it's in the mix (and compressed to mp3), nobody can tell anymore and who the hell cares anyway, other than the person who created it? It's a silly debate.

I'd personally take a Roland RE-301 over an RE-20 any day but I don't think it'd actually make a huge difference which one I got. At least not enough to justify spending $800 on the old analog unit instead of the digital.

EDM just attracts a crowd of very, very closed-minded people I guess. Analog vs. digital is just one of countless stupid debates I see constantly discussed here. Ah well.

The listeners don't really care what is used anyway, except autotune perhaps
