Here is a question for all the DJ's out there.

I am debating about getting (updating my CDJ's)

Has anyone ever played with Stantons final scratch? I am debating about getting the final scratch or upgrading to the CDJ 1000's.

I would like recs from people that have used it please. I really dont want replies of people saying "well i think the CDJ's are better cause they are pioneer"

I would like to hear what people think after using them. I cannot get into the city for another couple weeks to try em on my own

I think the final scratch is cool because its actually a vinyl that your playing with not cd's but if your planning to buy the final scratch u should wait for the version 2 because people are saying that version 1 has some problem with it.

You turn upto play a set with that thing, you think the crowds gonna like the long pause while they plug the thing into the mixer? Just my thoughts on it, its a good idea though and if it takes off I will happily use it, right now it is too fiddly.

if you get final scratch, you're going to need a set of techs too, right?

do you spin vinyl? honestly, the only reason i can see to get final scratch is if you already have techs, already spin vinyl, and want to do re-edits of tracks to play out.

otherwise, your money would be better spent on purchasing 50 new records (or in your case 100 or so CDs).

it does look pretty cool though. being able to play custom edits of tracks is pretty sweet...

Final Scratch is very easy to hook up, something you could do while the track is playing out. Its also only $500 which in the long run will be less expensive that all the money you will eventually spend on Vinyl. Not to mention you could play all the latest and greatest since you don't have to wait for the record to come in stock and wait for shipping n all that. The only problem with it that I see is that it only allows for you to play 6 minutes. The reason is because they wanted to allow large enough grooves to scratch with. I've heard stories about new encoded vinyl that'll be more for trance deejays. But other than that, i see no problems that can't be easily fixed.

but really though, do you really need to play a song longer than 6 minutes
i know there are some songs out there that get into the 12 minute mark, but at that point people are getting bored with the song
i dunno, it's prolly just me
i like to mix in before the main part of the song then mix out before it really starts to die down to keep the energy up and flowing instead of intro, up, down, outro, mix, intro, up, down, outro... and so forth, i like intro, up, down/mix
but then again, i play hard house...

They currently have only one vinyl, it's 6 minutes on one side, and 12 minutes on the other side.

I think i had heard they were thinking of making another vinyl with a 12 minute side and a 20 minute side or something.

not sure though.

I think i will wait for version 2.

For those conserned that i will only be using MP3's here is my setup.



2 technics 1200 mkII's
2 Ortofon Nightclub Series Carts
1 Numark EM 460 Mixer
2 Pioneer CDJ 100s's



The reason i am thinking about final scratch is the portablility of it. I already ripped about 300 of my 1200 (i think that is what i am upto now) vinyl. I want to update the CDJ's to either the CDJ 1000's or the Final Scratch. I love to scratch and fuck with all that. The CDJ 100's dont let me do that. I know the 1000's do but that is about 2000 dollars i would spend on the pair vs 500 for the FS. I have my Viao laptop so it would be perfectly portable, I would be able to use vinyl and .wav files of the records i dont want to bring. mp3 mixing may be tempting and i would probably mix some but i have hell CD maxi's and Mini's as well as CD-R's I have made as back ups for each vinyl. Eventually i will (hopefully) have a CD-R backup of all my vinyl.



Now has anyone used either or. I want to know the likes and dislikes of each. Thanks

Sounds like a no-brainer to me Trance_Nut. $500 versus $2000 and being able to have a vinyl at your fingertips. And you've already got the laptop. I would pick the FinalScratch without a doubt.

You will have to install Linux on your laptop, but the latest versions of that (Red Hat) are pretty easy to run and configure compared to how they used to be a few years ago.

You can still keep your CDJ-100s kicking around for CDRs you get. Or just rip those CDRs to a wav file and play it on your FinalScratch. Hell, you could rip your entire record collection and take it with you to a gig.

I've seen DJ Craze and John Aquaviva both spin using FinalScratch. Craze was amazing - he used it to the full. Doing custom edits, etc. Aquaviva sucked, but that's mostly because I didn't like his music.

thats a misconception. They include a custom version linux-lite that is only used for final scratch and nothing else. Dual boots with windows, and you can load mp3s in either OS. Simple to install, simple to use.

Glad you got the 6 min record thing cleared up, that is a pretty ridiculous rumor :P

The best way i can describe FS is that is is exactly like playing regular vinyl. Feels and sounds EXACTLY, and i mean EXACTLY the same in every way. You cant see the grooves on the record but youve got the waveform on the laptop instead.

but you should definitely try a demo out first to see if its for you
