Has anyone called a time of death on this forum? TA forums overall aren't dead, but The Production Studio certainly looks to be.

It ebbs and flows. Sometimes it's busier, right now it's quieter (it is summer outside don't forget).

The WIP thread has always been busy and there's a fair few posts every day. I've always said it's what you make it; people need to post so others do too.

I do think there's an intrinsic issue knowledge plateauing out; there's a certain level of production techniques that we all know now and then there's the divide of noobs who know very little and won't get a ton of love on here because as you pointed out in the other thread, there's a gazillion video tutorials online now.

There's also not massive steps forward in technology anymore, really just variations on existing systems. All DAWs basically do the same thing now. Most plugs do too, so it;s not like 10-15 years ago where massive strides were being made that were game changers (ableton, reason, melodyne etc).

I think the WIP thread is a great example of how far we've come - I'm honestly amazed at the quality of tracks that get posted up in there.

The production studio is still a goldmine ...

If your intentions are to look through old threads and search for tips, otherwise yes I'm inclined to agree with you ...

I think Djrann is right most of us are at the stage now where we are comfortable with experimenting on our own, and dont need approval from others, and the other half of people use YouTube...

I can't go near gearslutz these days.

There's an awful/weird mix of people who are incredibly knowledgeable but will argue about minutiae that is meaningless outside of a PHD thesis submission, and then a bunch of people who have a tiny bit of knowledge or bad education but are incredibly vocal.

I love it for things like acoustic design as there are bona fide legends on there, but there's just so many people who are literally equipment collectors posing as musicans, who despite $100k of audiophile equipment make the most basic sounding kraftwerk impressions and call it "experimental".

I don't really think people realize how much of a goldmine TA is, and it's worth dredging up old tutorial threads for some refresh knowledge.

There's even stuff we forget about that I'd love to revisit. One for instance is Diginut's (aaron, former TA mod) posts about "The Disco Smile" theory. I hadn't heard that in 10+ years then stumbled across it the other day. Going to revisit that on a track and see what come up....

I'm on reddit all the time but in terms of the advanced stuff we all talk about, it's useless. Its' great if you want a quick answer on something like excel spreadsheets, or how to change timing belt on a particular year vehicle, but the DJ and Audio subs are full of bad advice.

could it possibly be that forums these days are not a thing compared to the "old days", thus less and less people find their way here and instead end up on places like youtube and reddit?

kind of sad though, seen a lot of names pass through here that are now active in the business, doubt it'll be the same 10y from now with all the toxicity going on at other bigger platforms :/

That's really a trend in general; Forums on the whole have died, but they seem to maintain their place for the niche aspects where you need nuanced or detailed discussion that you simply don't get from social media groups or youtube videos.

Again, reddit is useful for questions but the problem with reddit is that a question gets asked, you get answers, then it's basically buried forever - it's quite disposable and not easily searchable, and if you do find something on topic, chances are the post has been archived and comments closed.

Threads can be brought back from the early 00's on here and revisited, and as said by lovehate, there's an absolute wealth of info to be had.

Conversation on production techniques require people to be asking questions. Nobody makes trance any more, the forum is called tranceaddict, therefore no new blood is coming to visit.
