In the spirit of trying to salvage another useless thread, I've recently been listening to some old, old Armin sets from the Good Old Days, which to be honest I've never really done before. I always found his productions very fluffy and assumed his sets would be crammed full of similar Dutch Edam, but I was aware he had a reputation for being a smoother and more musical mixer than the Tiestos and Oakenfolds of this world. And also, I kept searching for old prog tunes and seeing them come up on Spotify on ancient ASOT episodes, which made me realise he did play some better stuff than just the fluff.
And you know what? CD 1 of this compilation in particular is genuinely very good. The mixing sounds a bit unnatural in places but is overall very respectable, and blend between Sister Sister (Nalin & Kane Remix) and Sunset On Ibiza in particular is very silky and makes both tracks sound better than they do alone. Things are put together with a firm understanding of arrangement and harmony, and he manages to build the set up properly and even holds off dropping in the first gargantuan breakdown for a length of time that's downright tantric by the standards of a trance DJ. And also: look at that tracklist! Starecase, Chris Cowie, Slide, Van Bellen, Holden, Way Out West, Junkie XL, Lemon8... this is good trance music. Fair play Armin: you're absolute dogshit these days, but I can actually understand the nostalgia in this case.
