Chillout DJ looking for....stuff/help....

Hello All!

Thought I would start another annoying "how should i start" thread. I have been DJing on the local radio station for 2.5 years now and just started some small clubs. Unfortunatly, beatmatching is not a strong point so i am unable to spin anything with a beat to match. I do though have an uncany ability to mix chillout/ambient/triphop stuff. so here are a few simple questions:

Equipment:
What do I need to get? I have lots of CD's (50/50 spit on burned) and very few vinyl.
CD's or Vinyl?
Good Mixer?
House Setup? COST!!!!!!! Where are the deals?

Music:
Good Chillout CD's?
Where the hell should i play? Bars, Cafe's, Williams coffee pub?
Suggestions for songs?
If Vinyl, Where do i get it?
Mailing Lists/Promo Clubs to Join?

Mixing:
Techniques for Mixing Chillout?

Any other Suggestions.

If you mix Chillout, PLEASE CONTACT TO ME! It seems as though there is no real chillout DJ's around. by chillout i mean Deep Dish (Closest i can think of), who spin chicane, robert miles (new), MOS Chillout Session stuff, DJ Shadow, Etc.

Thanx a lot!

DJ Ampz

If you have a lot of cds already, then your choice is simple. Go for cds. It doesn't make sense to buy all of the tracks that you already have again in a different medium.

As far as what you should spin with, well, I would get okay decks and a good mixer to start off with. You can research what fits your needs yourself. I would suggest though, that you don't get cd decks with moving parts (ie trays or lids). Pioneer CDJ-100s are what I have, and they are great, but they are expensive.

As far as music goes, check out the sticky thread here on online music stores. There are a lot of them and many have sound clips that you can listen to before you buy.

I would also suggest that you get at least one turntable--even if it isn't a dj TT--so that you can record all of your vinyl onto cd and so that you can buy more vinyl to get tracks that aren't available on cd. This way you will never have to regret not getting TTs or getting cd decks.

For mixing techniques, I would think that using the teasing technique would work well. Once you have the tracks beatmatched, then you can play both tracks simultaneously to create twice the energy, or at least compensate for energy when the first track lacks it. Just make sure the two tracks go very well together!

To keep costs down, you have to consider two things. 1. The price of the equip that you want and 2. the price of the music from there after. You can easily spend hundreds of dollars more on your music than your original equip cost, but your music costs will be much more spread out. Just make sure you remember that your music costs will eventually be the most exspensive part of djing!

1200s and a nice mixer of course... id say go ahead and wait till you can afford the best if money is an issue right now beucase youre gonna upgrade soon anyway if you get crappy stuff. like someone said use the search button..theres plenty of equipment threads

as for music... try listening to the chilled out euphoria cds. there are like 2 or 3 sets ... atleast 2 im sure one mixed by red jerry and another by solar stone. solar stone is really big into the chillout stuff... they made a pretty cool remix of southern sun by oakenfold. my favorate is dj hooligan - hear you now [grand chillas mix] i acutally just got ahold of the vinyl and its pretty rare.

any how... yeah start off listening to euphoria cds and find some songs that are by artists in those track listings. you might wanna mix into progressive trance or something too.. they should all sound good together. oh... with this type just do whatever you can to be as smooth as possible. i cant tell you exactly what to do but just experiment. with this kind of genra, you are alowed alot of room for subtle experimentation that will set you apart from others.

good luck

just be aware that if you start spinning vinyls you'll have to dish out the cash like it's nobody's buisness.
