Where Do I Start?

Couldnt find a thread on beginning your own tracks. Can someone help me out with recommending a computer program to play with or equipment, etc?

Start out with some crappy eJay-program (drag & drop style) or Fruity Loops. Perfect for n00bs. Then when u know the basic stuff u can start mixing in reason & other more advanced programs

Depends what kind of person you are... I couldn't deal with eJay and never used it except the first time I tried it out. I hated not being able to make my own sounds.

I started using Buzz (http://www.buzzmachines.com) several months ago and, although it took a LONG time to be able to start doing what I wanted on it, it works perfectly for what I want right now. In a couple more months I will spring for a hardware synth (probably a Virus), but in the meantime I am learning a lot about how to make a song flow the way I want, a lot about mastering, and also a fair amount about synthesizers (though I wish I could find some good reading material about this).

I've never tried Fruity Loops or Reason, though I have heard good things about both. But Buzz is free and does what I want. I don't have the money for Fruity Loops or Reason, and I'd rather use freeware if I can than pirate software.

Don't act like FruityLoops is for beginners! I have no need for any other program like your 'advanced' Reason.

I started with Magix years ago (I know, it's crap) and I also tried EJay. Both suck, but it helped me a lot in developing my production skills. Now I use FruityLoops ONLY. It's all I need.

Ok..that I said can be missleading..Fruity Loops is not only for beginners. It's a pretty good program for advanced users too.

right

Fruitloops is ok if you import your own or more professional samples wile using it as a sequencer.

you could all so have a look at Orion Platinum

Ehm.. How else would you use it then? I don't think the sound quality sucks. I have dozens of VST synths and use various samples. No problem at all.

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about

the sound quality does not suck!

have you even used fruity before. You are obviously going to get more FX, synths, and samples off the net, right?..it will give you more sounds to use and play around with.

listen to heart & soul by lightworks (yes, the lightworks from this forum). It was made in fruity, now does that sound quality "suck"???

www.mp3.com/lightworks

EDIT: ok, that was harsh, your a fellow melbournian , but it doesnt suck

well it sounds like Fruity was just the sequencer for this track, I can't hear to many Fruity samples in it

anyway acording to the MP3.com page this is the rundown on Lightworks hardware/software ATM

Instruments
Roland E-38 Intelligent Keyboard, Fruityloops 3.40, Cubase VST32 v5.1, VAZ Modular, Pentagon I, NI Absynth, NI FM7, mdaPiano, DX10, Wasp, SimSynth Live, HAlion, Junox II, (tons of vst's)...

[i][b] i've learned alot by practising myself, so i'd say, don't give up doing that! people easily give up on fruityloops and move to reason because of that. according to me they're just lazy to try enough with fruity
Fruity is a really user-friendly interface, you won't find much programs that handle with such ease. the 3xosc is also way underestimated. i've used them for many main leads, simply by tweaking and placing effects on them. and they can be handled incredibly easy in the piano roll.

quote from lightworks.

yes, of course people are goping to use VST's and DXI's with fruity, that is why fruity supports DXI's, buzz machines, vst's etc. And of ocvurse people are going to use their own samples. The fruity team even offer a large sample collection to registered fruirty users. Fruity is intended to be used with extra stuff.

VAZ Modular, Pentagon I, NI Absynth, NI FM7, mdaPiano, DX10, Wasp, SimSynth Live, HAlion, Junox II: they are all VSt's, three of them coming with fruity.

In short, fruity is meant to be used with extra effects and synths, otherwise it would go down the reason road, and try and trap people into buying refills etc.

thats my humble opinion :P
