Hey yeah, top way to bring in the new year for sure.
Started off at my place with a few mates and a few drinks. To give you an indication of how that went, consider my mate's late entry for call of the year ("That pint of Vodka went straight to my head!") and the fact that I ended up with some bloody stray cat in the house, that it took all 4 of us to find. Anyway, good start to the night.
Kicked on to a female friend's party after that, where my mate pulled his calf muscle going in for a slide tackle (which severely restricted his dancing all night) and I managed to scalp a spare ticket to someone I'd only just met that night, and who ended up coming with us to Vodaphone. Anyway, we probably got there just before 11pm, and after a much needed visit to the lavs located the Bass Station section to go and give Nick Sentience a look - and he didn't disappoint. The guy seriously only looks about 16 years old, but he knows what he's doing. I'd describe it as an "intelligent" hard house set, that wasn't nearly as cheesy as some of the stuff I heard there later on (I'm not a big hard-house fan in case you were wondering). They also fucked up the new years eve thing, where they did the count-down about 30 seconds after they should've (everyone was already celebrating when Midro stopped Nick and got everyone to do the countdown again ).
After seeing in the new year, we went outside to watch the fireworks (or the ones that rose over Rod Laver arena anyway) before going into Timo. I was still feeling the effects of the half vodka/half lime cordial thing my mate brewed in the car on the way over at this point, so I can't really remember anything else apart from the fact that he seriosuly blew.
He was all over the place, and was laying down some seriously wierd tracks. I'm all for DJ's trying new things and whatever, but half of it didn't even seem like dance music. Looks like the Der Schieber hey-days are well and truly gone.
After about 30 mins of Timo, we pissed off into the backroom to see Space DJ's and I can tell you right now that they were amazing. Two guys, four decks, and some seriously telepathic mixing between the two of them. The music was banging and the mixing was sublime. Even if you don't like techno music, it would have been impossible to stand back without admiring their skill on the decks, and the way they can get otherwise unrelated 30 second chunks of tracks to fit together so perfectly. Bloody amazing, and one of the best sets I've seen all year for sure.
I think it was Wet-Muzik after that (i.e. Digby and Will-E-Tell I think?) and they were bloody good too, but it was just too hot in that room, so we left for Vodaphone again to see CJ Bolland - and this set wasn't half bad either. The MC pissed me off very quickly (especially with all that "Melbourne, do you want another one" crap that went on for clubland equivelent of 40 days and 40 nights at the end) but it still went right off, especially when The Prophet got played. By the way, can someone clarify something for me? Is CJ Bolland just the DJ, or both the DJ and the MC? If it's just the DJ, then sorry for being a killjoy, but he could do worse than to ditch that MC just quietly. Only my humble opinion though.
Anyway, we went for some exploring after that (ended up on a table in the corridor in front of 2 or 3 $9.50 Vodka Redbulls I think ) before going back into see Sister Bliss, and I was pleasantly suprised. I was a expecting a much trancier set, but I really liked the progressive-ish thing she had going (Dinosaur 3D being one of the highlights of the set). I think we danced to her for an hour or so before checking out the Bass Station section again (dunno who it was, but I didn't like it) and the techno room (think it was Richie Rich playing? Once again, was pretty good, a tad less banging and more minimal than the stuff before it though) before catching the end of the set when she did I nice mix-up (could've been a synergy) of Chase the Sun and Love Story, which I thought capped off what I'd seen of her set quite well. We were sitting down at this point, but I made sure to drag everyone back out to the dancefloor in anticipation of another Sean Quinn stormer.
He was a bit all over the place for the first half an hour really, and he didn't seem quite sure whether he wanted to keep it straight-up progressive, more uplifting progressive or some breaksy fusion of the two, but he really picked it up in the second half. The Beauty Never Fades mixed into the Holden mix of Fine Day bit was one of the more "spiritual" moments of the night, but after that I was so fucked from having not eaten for about 12 hours (the amount of alcohol I'd drunk may or may not have had something to do with it as well ) that we ended up playing soccer with a half full water bottle for the last part, before leaving to meet my friend who'd fallen asleep in my mates car about an hour earlier.
Bumped into Philby on the way out, and it took me a while to work out who he was and what he was calling my name for (sorry mate ) which should give you some sort of indication of the state I was in at that point. Btw, InAComa, were you the girl with Phil when he stopped me on my way out? Sorry, I was obviously kinda spaced out at that point and it didn't occur to me until just then. So yeah, if it was, and if you can remember me, hi. If it wasn't then never mind.
Anyway, that's about it. Top night. 363 days till next year and counting.
