Telewest in March - Licence opposition

Plans for Arena rave opposed
Police are concerned over drug problems

Police are opposing plans to hold a rave at Newcastle’s Telewest Arena because of concerns about drugs at the venue at a similar event in September.

An 18-year.old Northumberland man died last September after becoming ill at a rave at the Arena hosted by promoters Godskitchen.

The Arena has applied to Newcastle City Council for entertainment licence extensions from midnight to 6am on March 8-9 and for May 24-25 and December 6-7.

The Arena last night confirmed the first extension was for an event by Birmingham-based Godskitchen - an event the police say “cannot be deemed safe”. The Arena said the other extensions were also for major dance events.

At the September event, shop assistant Russell Kirby, of Ovingham, took ill and died. An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.

The city council’s Licensing Committee will decide on the application on Monday.

Chief Inspector Graham Smith has writ ten to the council saying “As you are aware the last such event held at the Arena in September2002 resulted in the tragic death of Mr Russell Kirby.

“Subsequent police investigations revealed significant levels of drug misuse at the venue and excessive recoveries of illegal substances made during a police search of the venue following the event.

“As such, it is the strong view of Newcastle West Area command that neither the Arena management nor Northumbria Police, despite robust search regimes, are able to prevent excessive levels of illegal sub stances entering the venue and being taken by those attending the event

“It is therefore our belief that a dance type event similar to the Godskitchen event in September 2002 cannot be deemed safe and as such we object to this application.”

Arena executive director Colin Revel last night said. ‘We have a good working relationship with the police and can under stand their position.

“We will give our comments on their letter to the appropriate people on the licensing committee. We have a no drugs policy.”

A report by council officers points to a number of similar events being held at the Arena with no objections having been lodged. These other events passed off with out any significant incident, the report says.

It adds that the Arena management “have in the past proved capable of organising and managing a great many major events, in clubbing several late night dance events”

Godskitchen would not comment yesterday.

The stupid thing is, how many people die everyday from drug abuse in newcastle? Or r currently in their hospitals, they cant stop drug use in their city, so how cna they ban an event from taken place. Everyone knows wot goes on at dance events, but nobody can stop it, unless they have strip searches.

The stupid thing is, how many people die everyday from drug abuse in newcastle?

there are well over million people on tyneside i think, not 12000

i knew this would happen, that why i kept saying to people there is unlikely there will be another godskitchen event at the telewest, to be fair people are way to stupid with their drugs, no disrespect to the guy who died, but its a true fact.

the fact that sum1 died at such a major event in one of the towns main "tourist" attractions, used for kids shows and rock concerts and everything, its a major concern that such a publicised death hangs over its head, and the council are tight enough already without it happening.

gc has the nec for its. gods main reason for doing it in newcastle is to give the north east an evetn, as it was an area still without a large event

I Can understand that and agree with it, I guess with them having roots in Brum I said NEC, but there will be lots of places, from manc to milton keynes to right down south, but imo it'd be a shame if u guys lost out, cos u travel so far for everything else, rewarding u is a nice thing for them to do
