What makes a set good?

What makes a set good?
What does a DJ have to think about when he make his set?
What is good, what is bad? Song order? Different songs? Mixing?

So, what makes a set good? Reply your ideas!

Well in my opinion a good set begins with the mixing. Obviously track selection is very important, but poor mixing can ruin a good tracklist. Good mixing, however, can make bad track selection seem good. Track choice and order is also very important for a good set. Not only spinning good records, but spinning them at the proper time and in the right order is essential. Another thing that many people don't think about is speed. Choosing the right speed for the records you are spinning can make a huge difference. Spinning a deeper trance set at a high bpm or a high engery trance set at a slow speed can really damage the integrity of the set. Overall, finding the perfect balance between all of that stuff, along with using a lot of creativity, is what makes a set great.

I can't disagree with what's been said, but IMHO the replies have missed an important ingredient - the crowd!

I always find an up for it crowd inspire me to play a better set. Or maybe it's just that a really up for it crowd makes you think you've played a blinder

And a final word on track selection - don't play too many big tunes together!

Track Selection
Track selection is @ the base of a good set. A set made by good tracks also if it's mixed by fade-in and fade-out is a good set.

Track play order / Structured build-up
To Play good tracks randomly is like to play bad tracks: is very important to build the set song after song.

Mixing
Good mixing is very recommended for a good set but little mistakes of beatmatching or similar in a set good builded aren't a big problem.

Speed
I agree with DJ Wildefire:

Volume / Equalization
To enjoy a good set it's very important that volume isn't too loud or too soft and the sound is right [Good equalization]

Interaction
For the sets played in front of a crowd is very important the interaction with the crowd.

Creativity / Improvisation
Nothing to say.

Thanks ya'll. Good input by everyone actually. I did miss the important point about crowd interaction tho. I know that, but I guess I forgot cuz I've never mixed in front of a big crowd before. Someday tho....I shall share my trance with the world. Hahaha. Peace.
