Women and the Draft

Hypothetical: If the draft was reinstated, should women also be drafted...considering the age of gender equality we live in?

Nope. I don't think women even ought to be permitted in the military as it has been clearly demonstrated to negatively affect morale.

Gender equality is fine, but this is trying to manufacture gender equivalence.

That said, I don't support the draft for the following reason:
1. Conscription is slavery.
2. Slaves do lousy work.

So why do you participate in the benefits of society? If society deems conscription as legal then you can lodge your complaint by moving elsewhere. Obviously enough people think that conscription ISN'T slavery. Also yes the draft should be extended to include women. If gender equality is truly desired then the sacrifices must accompany the benefits.

I think that there should be minimal physical requirements for a person to join the army, regardless of sex. There'd be more men than women in the army in the end, though, but the gender equallity will be achieved.

Because I serve myself best by doing so, obviously.

Only an idiot would relocate merely because of the foolish ideas of the masses. By your reasoning, I'd have to move underwater, or to the moon, for there is no society on earth whose majority opinions I would unilaterally agree with. For that matter, society itself would be an unachievable goal, since individual humans have far to diverse a degree of opinions. In the future, I'd highly recommend you actually think things through to their logical conclusions.

Then they are mistaken. Conscrption is slavery by definition.

I don't agree with the draft on principle. if you want to fight for your country, then by all means fight for it. if the government can't get enough soldiers to fight, and they have to force people to, then, it's obvious that the majority of the populace does not want to go to war (or at least doesn't have the balls to put their life on the line for it.

as far as women in the military, i think that it should be allowed, and if a draft must occur, men and women should be treated no different. is it true that they bring down morale? i'd like to see your source for that, i would think the opposite, who doesn't like a little female company now and then.

but, that is probably not allowed, maybe that is the reason for the morale drop? in any case, please let me know where you heard that arbiter.

they should be conscripted too, but not put on the frontline where gender really does have a negative effect in dual-sex units. eg. if a female is wounded a male is much more likely to stay with the female soldier until she is cared for, instead of pushing onto the objective if it was a male soldier. this has also been found to be applicable when a male soldier is wounded, a female will feel more compelled to stay and ignore the objective, instead of pushing ahead like she would normally do so if the casualty had been a female.

just put women in all the admin/sissy roles, the kind of positions you'd find ppl like arbiter occupying.

OUCH!

anyway, on one hand, i agree with you about non-frontline positions for women. on the other hand, it could be argued that a woman would be more compelled to go after the enemy with a vengance should one of her comrades be injured or killed. I've seen some pretty vindictive bitches!

besides the point, i disagree with using a blanket statment over the whole female side of the species. I'd like to think (perhaps i am being naive) that a soldier fights for a reason, and does all he or she can to eliminate emotion from the endeavour. I'm sure this is not always the case, but in general, i think that women would be just as capable of this as men.

So what right does a government have in taxing its citizens? Doesn't that equate to stealing? What right does a government have to set laws? Isn't that an imposition of their morality upon people who may have a differing opinions? In as much as you are being taxed to provide for public finance, and as much as you are forcibly punished for violating societal laws, you are forced to defend society from those that threaten. You can't pick and choose what pertains to your own benefit when you reap the sacrifices of other societal contributions. So unless you would like to relocate to a society that doesn't demand as much from its citizens I would recommend you stop bitching about your inabilities to get away with reaping the benefits, yet experiencing none of the sacrifices, that belonging to our society entails. One other recommendation that I would make would be to band together with those of like minds and get that policy changed. I don't like the thought of being forced into service either but it's a responsibility that you take up in being a part of this society. And in conclusion I would recommend you to think through YOUR thoughts to a logical conclusion and then have somebody else proof read your logic.

further follow up:

As stated in webster's dictionary:

con·scrip·tion
Pronunciation: k&n-'skrip-sh&n
Function: noun
Date: 1800
: compulsory enrollment of persons especially for military service :

Maybe I'm being a bit haste but I'll check other dictionaries to see if slavery is indeed a definition for conscription. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.

If a draft was instated which I don't think it would(most nations have plenty big armys) then I think women should be drafted. I don't think that it would have any negative affect, because if it was deemed that one's gender would get in the way of a mission, then s/he could be trained for something else when drafted, or simply relocated, there are plenty of important people not on the field anyways.

uhh.. occrider, i think what he was saying was he doesn't agree with conscription. however, he's not going to leave the country over it. he IS meeting with like minded people and trying to effect change.

you can call it bitching if you want, but then i guess the blacks were just bitching when they wanted to be free?
