Dual processors

I'm thinking of upgrading my comp and was looking at the option of dual processors. Does anybody know if they work well with vstis? Eg if I'm running 10 vstis in cubase, will the processors be used to their full potential?

Thanx.

Depends on your OS. Production under the Win2k platform is significantly better under the dual processors b/c it uses a special method to handle interrupts (higher than 15, APIC), but on single CPU systems all devices will have the same IRQ (9.) Also read up on your soundcard's hardware compatibility.

And no I doubt 10 VST will use up all your processing. But I suspect the limiting factor is not processing in most cases. Physical memory and disk access speed are usually the limiting factors.

Firstly, running a dual processor system is expensive business and is only supported by Win2000 or NT as far as I am aware. Secondly, Win2000 is not a consumer OS and in my opinion, if you want a gaming/production machine you are best sticking with Win98 and splashing out on a large capacity, fast hard drive running your games from a virtual disk on the drive.

GIRL'S DIARY
Sunday 11th May 2003:
Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely. I went shopping in the afternoon with the girls and I did turn up a bit late so I thought it might be that. The bar was really crowded and loud so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk. He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we go somewhere nice to eat.
All through dinner he just didn't seem himself; he hardly laughed, and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying.
I just knew that something was wrong. He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in; he hesitated, but followed.
I asked him again if there was something the matter but he just half shook his head and turned the television on. After about 10 minutes of silence, I said I was going upstairs to bed. I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh, and a sad sort of smile. He didn't follow me up, but later he did, and I was surprised when we made love. He still seemed distant and a bit cold, and I started to think that he was going to leave me, and that he had found someone else. I cried myself to sleep.

WinXP also supports dual processors. BTW, XP is a fár better OS than Win98 when it comes to producing (well, in fact, when it comes to everything).

When you're going to use many VST-effects (like 20 reverbs at one time), it's a very good idea to use two processors, when you turn the dual processor optimize function on in Cubase, you can get up to 180% of the capacity of a single processor! Note that it's also adviceable to use twice as much RAM.
