roommate having trouble with pc...

my roommate has a brand new dell dimension 4600c (the ultracompact and ultraquiet one)

he recently started having problems with it.

first, at random times, we could hear a buzzing noise in the speakers for like 3 seconds... rarely.

then he started having trouble with the sleep mode - the computer would go to sleep but wouldn't wake up.

then the pc started NOT turning on sometimes - the power light is on, keyboards lights flash for a moment and that's it - no video, no sounds or anything, no activity (sounds like a dead bios though). he'd need to turn it on/off several times before he'd get it to boot.

now the pc randomly shut down (even though he disabled the sleep mode as i told him) and won't turn back on.

i told him he should call dell, but before he spends hours on the phone with them, could someone plz confirm my guees of a faulty power supply? or could it be anything else?

my guess would be he didnt fully disable sleep mode (could be bios setup), but its not uncommon for computers not to wakeup from sleepy mode.

Hardware related problems will occur in the 1st week so, since this is a new pc cant rule that out either.

I've been a proud owner of a Dell Notebook for the past 5 months. I have yet to have any problems with it.

check dell forums ( off the official website )

you'll hear about every possible issue with the machines

It's actually a good forum + there's Dell people who are mods on there and they are usually no b00lshyt

It's amazing how lazy these computer companies can get when they build them. They say that they put them through a million-step check program to ensure you that everything will work fine when it gets to your house...but I'm starting to believe that is bullshit. My friend bought a computer from the Alienware company recently and when it arrived to his house he couldn't get any sound to work...so after troubleshooting for awhile we opened up the case (which was a bitch to open) and found out that the soundcard wasn't even installed correctly.

Later when I was looking through his BIOS I noticed that they didn't configure the BIOS correctly for his video card. He has a 256MB video card and the BIOS was selected for 128MB. That kind of stuff is uncalled for. He paid nearly $1800 for this system (excluding monitor & speakers). I built a new system a few weeks after he got his for $1300 and it's better than his. Computer companies are not worth buying from...especially since they're so easy to build yourself.

The only pre-built computer I would even think about buying would be from here: http://www.go-l.com/home/index.htm *DROOL*
