Invisible Grin VA mixed by Jay Burnett - Deeper Shades of Euphoria

Originally posted @ trance.nu

In 1998 Telstar TV released Euphoria. A compilation that encapsulated the (then) underground sounds of trance. The double-disc, mixed by PF Project, showcased select tracks like The Egg 'Getting Away With It', Ventura 'Birds', Coyote 'Spirits Dancing' and Bedrock 'Set In Stone', as well as early exclusives of Armin 'Blue Fear', Chakra 'Home', Paul van Dyk 'For An Angel', Moonman 'Don't Be Afraid', BT 'Flaming June'...the list goes on. A landmark compilation and quite possibly the best trance mix to date. Since then the Euphoria brand have been riding the trance wave, and churning out compilation after compilation, each one more and more commercial than the last. Until now that is...

Jay Burnett is renowned in the music industry. From discovering the Beastie Boys and helping produce Afrika Bambaataa's 'Planet Rock' through to spawning acts like Criminal Element Orchestra and Latin Rascals. Jay worked on Kylie's Japanese artist album 'Princess' and helped produce Paul van Dyk's stunning long-player 'Out There And Back'. Jay has been working on the ‘Deeper Shades of Euphoria’ since April 2002, and only now do the blissful beats and the countless textures of ‘Deeper Shades’ finally see the light of day. It’s been worth the wait.

"I wanted to make this album different, so it features many remixes that you would not normally find in the Euphoria series, but that actually fit perfect." Jay explains in the inside cover. "I hope this provides a most interesting listening experience." That is does; and incredibly well. 'Deeper Shades' is the best Euphoria mix in a long, long time. There’s no doubt about that. It’s innovative and totally engaging.

From the start the epic intro ‘The Wheat’ segues seamlessly with Shmuel Flash’s haunting ‘Chilling Moments’. It’s breathtaking. The remainder of disc one twists and turns through trance and house; from the funky Mr G remix of Hairy Butter ‘Locked In Locked Out’ and the exquisite Nalin & Kane re-rub of ‘Sister Sister’ by Sister Bliss, through to the classics from BBE, Energy 52 and Tillman & Ries. You’ll be blown away by the transition of Sasha ‘Wavy Gravy’ into Robert Miles thoughtful ‘Children’ piece and equally impressed as the mix takes a tribal turn with Spooky ‘Belong’.

Xstasia instils a moving moment with her luscious vocal cut ‘Sweetness’ before the rays of Oakenfold’s ‘Southern Sun’ gradually light the mix. Solar Stone turn on the feel good factor with their chill rendition of Oakie’s last year sensation. So, so soothing! Laura B’s adorable breakbeat meets vocal gem ‘Midi a Minut’ picks up the pace and sets the stage for Mike Koglin’s masterful ‘Silence’. Ascension’s angelic ‘For A Lifetime’ blends blissfully into Jakatta’s ‘Feelin Blue’ and in the closing quarter, hosts the memorable melody of PPK anthem ‘ResuRection’.

A rather paced down Digital Blonde ‘Mooga’ opens the second disc. It’s alluring melody subtly merges into The Realm’s rather poignant ‘Lost In Space’ ahead of the tranquil Lange remix of Brainchild ‘Symmetry C’. A threesome of divine vocal pieces follow, starting with Sinead O’Connor, then Iio and finally a soul driven, upbeat ‘Storm In My Soul’ by Kamasutra. A track that just shouldn’t mix perfectly, does and very well. Elliot J’s hypnotising remix Faithless ‘We Come 1’ takes proceedings to deeper levels before Solar Stone serve up their second helping of chill. All’s good. The mix takes a trance direction with Lost Tribe’s classic and heavenly ‘Angel’ effortlessly gliding into CM ‘Dream Universe’. Three Hooj classics back to back. What more could you ask for?

Jay Burnett sets up for a house edged close with Weekend Players and Jakatta in on the act. Faithless lift the mix to euphoric heights with their ‘Insomnia’ classic combing intimately with Jakatta ‘American Dream’ and the Afterlife interpretation of Roger Sanchez’s serene ‘Another Chance’ will have you in dreamland. It’s inescapable. Rare chill out renditions of ‘Greece 2000’ and ‘Everyday’ gradually slow the mix before a skilful vocal drop of Delerium ‘Silence’ sits on Knaj Hagan ‘Virtual Life’. Outstanding.

‘Deeper Shades of Euphoria’ is a must buy CD! And we can only hope this isn’t the last time Jay Burnett stops by the Euphoria branch…

Saw the advert on telly and it sounded pretty good. How ever i cant help but notice some of the euphoria albums are somewhat cheesy & similar. The only one i really enjoyed and found unique was 'White label Euphoria'

Sorry bout that ..

And to others, yes this Euphoria album seems to look back to what EUPHORIA albums were really ment to be.. non cheesy nor commercial.

The first 4 Euphorias were the best ever ... now this one , is just added to those
