HD25s question

i've been looking at the Sennheiser HD25 headphones. I tried them out the other day, and have a few questions. I know this should probably be in the headphones thread, but it's too long to read it all, and pretty much every page has stuff about the 25s

The sound quality I heard in these is awesome, I tried out the technics 1200 cans, the pioneer 1210s, and the sennheiser 280s, and these kick arse over them all for sound quality and feel on the ear / head.

I've seen these referenced here as hd25 and hd25s are these two diff types, if so what is the diff, or are people referring to them as plural.

If I want to use these on a normal portable walkman style cd player will I need to use an amp to get a decent sound level out of them, or will I be comfortable with them unamplified.

I've seen a few little one AA battery amps for portable use but haven't heard much about quality issues or anything with them, can anyone recommend places to look for this sort of thing.

I'm in Australia if that helps in recommendations for places to look / advice about prices etc. I've hopefully got a mate coming back from singapore this week and will be able to get the hd25 for 309 AUD if all goes well (normal cost here is around 450 AUD)

Wonder who that mate is eh :P

Ahh regarding the plural bit, there is no difference. Some people like to use just an S to remove confusion as there are the HD25 and HD25SP.

HD25 are the ones you're talking about (@ landspeed) where as the HD25SP are the model below. Different headband design, and not as powerful drivers etc. Wouldn't bother with the SP version. Oh yeah and I was talking about the HD25 version up here in singa's, not the HD25SP .

Regarding the power out of a normal player it won't be brilliant. You will find, like many headphones that if you try and drive it too loud it does get distorted as the player isn't powerful enough. Because these are a closed ear design though you shouldn't need to drive it too loud as the headphones do a great job of blocking out ambient noise.

If you're still unsure, I you can sample mine when I get back and I can order you a pair if you are happy. Alternatively just go into landspeed with a discman etc and ask to test it.

hehe,

yeah when I tried them at landspeed I made sure that I tried them down low as well, and they work great (cept for one ear dropping out cause of the crappy amp)

I'm pretty happy with them, and I know that I can't beat that price, so I definitely want a pair. I was mainly wondering whether I'd need an amp as well, and what sorta experience people have had with portable amps for walkmans etc.

You should try out the pioneer dj1000. Having used the sp25 sp and the sp25's, and the sony mdv 7000's i can sfely say nothing comes close. I haven't had one bit of distortion of these bad boys since i got them. truly superb headfones

The HD25 has a double headband, the HD25-SP has a single...

Here's an interesting set of opinions..

Here's some info that will help A LOT:

The side views are especially informative. However, I believe headphone.com gives the HD25-SP and the HD25 a bad rap.. mostly because they are ignorant of a DJ's needs...
