I need to convince my dad to upgrade our internet. Right now we have Rogers High Speed (or should I say low speed ) Cable. Well it's networked to 4 computers which basically makes it incredibly slow. I need to convince my dad to get a faster connection but I'm not sure what kind of connection to go for. One that can be networked and won't cost a fortune. Any ideas?

so whats the problem then man? it doesn't really matter if there hooked up to 4 computers because basically a hub or port just redirects the connection. the only difference you see is when you download stuff. if 4 people download stuff at the same time, i agree its very slow. is there ever a situation where it happen where 4 computers are downloading at once? if so then you need a new connection...

Me and my bro are download whores . My bro is downloading movies off of iMesh 24/7 and I think that the other computer is being used for downloading constantly. I download lots of music here and web pages load slowely, when I download a movie trailer here it takes like 10 minutes but on my DSL at my moms it takes me like a minute or less, I download almost all of my stuff at my moms because my DSL connection is only on my computer so I download like 2 gigs of stuff a day .

well then since both of you guys are hardcore download junkies the best solution is to be a ddsl, sdsl or xdsl..xdsl is a lot faster but faster = more $$$, ultimately for you only i would suggest a T1 lol but i dont think you can afford it...

My dad makes mad cash but he's careful with it and I'm not sure if he'd be up for a T1 line, not sure how easy it would be to network it too. Any websites for DDSL, SDSL or XDSL? I need some prices and names to show my dad and maybe he'll consider it, also need info on wether I can network the connection to 4 computers and if it's easy/expensive, thanks for the info so far

Hehehe, you can network any connection to any number of computers, as long as you have a router on the main computer (the one that the connection is hooked up on) and network adapters/network cards on all the others...

And the only reason why that download is slow for you is because your bro/other computers are hogging all the bandwidth... if you were downloading less, there would actually be more bandwidth and you would see pages load faster, but hey...

And regarding SDSL/XDSL I think www.dsl.ca has some interesting offers... and you might as well call up Rogers and ask them if they offer T1 or partial T1 line, because they did offer it a while ago when they were still called Rogers @Home...

I don't think a T1 is the way to go.. If all you need is more downstream bandwidth, you're probably better off with a high speed ADSL connection... Theoretically, cable is faster downstream than a T1...

In practice, they're about the same... A T1 is more constant obviously, but it's a max of 1.54 megabits per second.

A T1 is a great solution if you have upstream problems, but that's not the case here.

You should probably try Bell Sympatico (I know most people think it sucks, I do too, but it depends on your area, I know some people with it, where it's waaaaaaaaaaay faster than cable in the same area.)

If I were you, I'd try bell high-speed, and split that with 2 computers, then split the cable with the other 2 computers, that way you and your brother basically have your own connection.

If you wanted to be really fancy, you could put the 2 connections together in a multi-honed configuration, and share the 2 connections between all 4 computers, but for that you should use a decent router. (You can do it with a linux box, but it's a bit complicated to get working.)

What does that do exactly?

It balances the load between the 2 (or more) connections. So if no-ones downloading anything, and you decide to download a movie, it sends the request out on connection 1 (for example, the rogers connection).

Then your brother wants to download some more porn, so the router sees that connection 1 is pretty busy, and sends the request out on connection 2 (the bell connection).

Now the server sending you your movie is slow, and only sending at 10Kbps. Your brothers porn supplier is sending his file at 50Kbps. So now when your brother goes to download the latest Brittany spears album, the router would send that request out on the rogers connection, as it's currently doing less transfer.

Now his mp3's are coming in at 20Kbps. This means:

Connection 1 (rogers) is doing 30Kbps.
Connection 2 (bell) is doing 50Kbps.

Now you go to bring up CNN to see who's bombing who now, and the router again sends the request through the rogers connection. You start streaming the 'Live bombing video', which again goes through the rogers connection, and since no one else cares to watch it, you get it at 200Kbps.

Now your mom wants to check her stocks, so she goes to yahoo's stock page, and that request goes through Bell, as that's now the connection with the least traffic.

Get it?

THT.net has a 3mbit (that's megabit not megabyte) service for 69.99/month with no download/upload limit. The Highroller has it so his word is better than mine. I think it's about 3mbit download (roughly 364kb/sec) and 640kbit upload (80kb/sec). You probably won't find anything cheaper for that price
