Waste

Here in America we have plastic this plastic that.!! yikes!!

anways, i have talked to many europeans that tell me that since their countries and smaller, more crowded (and wiser ) they use more glass and implement different ways of reusing and recycling things... Anyways i was thinking it would be neat to talk about the waste management systems from around the world, since it has been and will be such an important issue.

you're right. i dont remember seeing as many plastic bottles in Croatia. the mineral water bottles are returned to the shop - they end up getting reused. same with many wine bottles. still there's plenty of waste though, as the "recycling" program is far from functioning correctly there.

Be Cool!

OMg dont get me started on waste management. I live in canada so its like we have a half assed recycling system, however it leaves allot to be desired considering how much gay useless plastic is used. I hate my thorw away society soooo much its freaking pathetic nobody cares about shit here its allbout the $$ 24/7. Lake ontario ( i live rght next to it) is sooo freaking poluted its not funny at all. U cant fish outove it cuz youl get some kind of waste in u from the fish. Most wastefull of all is comerical and industrial companyies. There is sooooooo much stuff that could be done but noone cares cuz there aint no $$ in recyling most things + the fact that most technologies for recycling are in there relative infancy making them expensive and unreliable.

Well I prefer to drink out of plastic cups myself, nothing against glass, it's just that glass is more dangerous.

Non disposable plastic cups also last longer, and they're damn hard to break, unlike glass.

Although plastic is often used as a disposable medium, it should be treated with more respect.

But I did think of a genious way to remove trash, someone once said we should ship it into space... but I came up with a better solution, ship it straight into the heart of the blazing sun.
j/k

Unfortunately that was until about a year ago. Now mineral water is being distributed in plastic bottles. Beer is still in returnable glass bottles, though. But what I find really funny here is that regardless of the fact we have very clean water from the pipes, people are still buying natural spring water, whose quality is not much better than the pipe water. I really don't know why somebody would carry 2 liters of water every day from the store if he can get the same quality water at home. Besides, it's creating a large amount of unnecessary plastic garbage.

Anyway, plastic can be recycled just as easily as glass can, and plastic bottles are generally better because they are lighter, cheaper and more sturdy. But there lies the problem. They're so cheap that nobody wants to bother with returning them for re-use. With glass bottles here you get a price discount when you return an empty one to the store. Plastic is cheap enough that the value of the discount is totally irrelevant. A good solution would be a bio-degradable plastic, I've seen some projects on that matter appear, but they just sort of disappeared soon after. Until then all that can be done is to appeal to people's conscience and make them take care of materials so they can be reused.

i agree, but i drink bottled water here in Los Angeles because 1) i think the tap water tastes horrible and 2) i have a meal plan at college which I'm forced to get where I have alot of money to waste so I might as well buy bottled water.
back home in st. louis, i love the taste of the tap water there. I totaly prefer it to bottled water.

I think Canada is the most wasteful country (per capita) in the world. Obviously this is due to the copious amount of space we have in which we can dump garbage. I think we're slowly going in the right direction though. I know in my city, we have an effective recycling program in addition to a brand spankin' new composting plant.
