Just thought I'd share the following while we're on the subject. Max Graham probably hit the nail right on the head when he recently gave this interview in Singapore.

Okay.. well, I was really into it in the beginning. I love technology. But I think now all we see are kids not willing to support small independent labels anymore. Hope is a great label, but sales have gone down. Ask anyone- what’s happening is a cause for concern. Guys are using Final Scratch and playing tracks burned on CDs. You see some of them taking “Sander Kleinenberg Live @ Space, Ibiza”, cut out the tracks and edit them so they can mix it- I mean, what IS that? These small labels make no money. Our remix fees go down, so we don’t have enough money to buy gear for our studio to make more records. The labels don’t want to make more records because people will just rip them and make them downloadable. So everybody loses- the producers lose, the labels lose, the stores lose because they can’t sell any more records.
I was in a restaurant in Toronto about three weeks ago, and there’s a DJ with Final Scratch. There’s maybe about twenty people in the restaurant, and he’s playing every brand new record that’s out on white label, test pressing.. and you know.. where do you get that? And I hear the background of one of the tracks, it’s like “KISS FM!”- He’s just ripped it off Digweed’s show! These kids are killing the scene. I think it’s a good wake-up call for the major record labels, because these guys have millions of dollars and they can afford that, but it’s small record labels that wouldn’t be able to sustain. So many of them are growing out of business. It’s not attracting new producers and new remixers anymore. It’s not growing anymore; it’s shrinking. These guys that are into the scene but don’t want to pay for vinyls.. it’s just tough. We can see the CD thing has backfired. The press are really bad too because they get a lot of stuff ahead of time to review, and we see Sasha’s album out on the Internet two months before its release. I mean, it’s not even a mix album, it’s his personal album! That affects sales, which will eventually affect the decision to make an album, because an album like Sasha’s takes a lot of money to do. People have to support what they want to see now and in the future. Sander Kleinenberg will come up with a superb album and the record label won’t want to put it out and people will go “Oh why aren’t you putting it out?” These are the same people who download it free! “Oh, where’s Sander’s next album?” I mean, it’s like, it’s their fault..

) and YES, I download mp3's and burn them on cd's, BUT only to practise at home and to listen if the songs are any good. I will however NEVER play ripped mp3's in a dancing or wherever and make money of them (besides the sound quality sucks, you can hear it immediately if you're playing an mp3).
