First get rid of windows ME, heh, it really is crap

Secondly open up you cmputer aand check the ide cables in the back of the cd rom drives, they may have come lose. So check them first, otherwise when your computer starts up go into the bios and see if the roms are detected in there, if they are its a problem with windows.

Hope that helps a little

I hope that slves it, if they are detected in the bios you know its a prob with window, but its usually either a dodgy cd rom drive, or the plug has come out

I had my cd rom drive bugga up on me, started opening and closing randomly just had to swap it

It's probably a file system error (your cpu thinks your hdds work in dos mode).

Run your cpu in DOS mode, type 'regedit' and restore an old registry copy that was made before your problem occured, that should help.

I recently had this problem with my HP. If looking at the IDE cable doesn't work, there is a fix on HP's website that deals with it. Basically, what happened to me was one of my programs that utilized the CD Drives (i.e. burning software)re-wrote something in the registry that set upper and lower "limits" on the drives. Basically, it kept Winblows XP from "seeing" the drives, even though they were detected by the bios. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

What the heck ... I have a similar issue as well although slightly different. Basically, I have a cdrw set up as the master, and a dvd drive set up as the slave. Both are set to cable select. When I try that setup the lights flash but xp doesn't detect the drives. But when I use only plug in 1 drive(either one works) it detects that drive fine. Could it be a bad cable? Any suggestions?
