I have $20,000 to dump on a studio when I move back home...I've been saving a little bit of money for that purpose. I have a pretty good idea of what I would need gear wise, but I would like your opinions also on the subject. What would you have in the studio? What would be the interior design and the building design?

$20,000? To dump? lol.

Unless you're already a professional DJ, don't drop any more than $2,000 on a complete set of beginner equipment. If you ARE already a professional DJ, then you probably don't need input from anyone here on what you should be buying.

I saw your gear in the other thread, although I haven't heard anything of yours, if you can't produce anything great now (not saying you cannot) then buying a 20K studio isn't going to help things. [End not paying attention]

I mean, if you don't know exactly what you would spend with that much maybe you should work on doing some serious research . And please don't try to flame me again .

Anyways, I'd stick with a cubase based studio, with a few powercore elements, virus powercore, a nice small room with acoustic treatment, and a few nice VA synths.

I think 20K is a bit excessive though. I'm thinking about building a studio someday* and I wouldn't even need to spend an 1/8th of that much for my projected needs.

With that money just buy anything and everything. Well thats what I would do.

You would get better results buying one piece of equipment and learning to use it to its full potential, rather than buying everything and knowing little bits about each.

£20K to dump in a studio - a new PC, a Virus KC, some nice monitors and the rest I would bank and gain some interest on it.

First of all, build a room without parallel walls. Then, acoustically treat that room with Auralex Panels and Bass Traps.

Second, buy a Nord Lead, JP8000 and Access Virus. I also recommend a real analog like the Juno 106.

Third, buy some softsynths that a lot of us at TA recommend like Z3TA+ etc.

Fourth, buy a digital mixer like the Yamaha 01V.

Fifth, buy an Apogee AD16 to convert those synths to digital pre-O1V.

Sixth, buy a two channel DAC, such as an Apogee Mini-DAC for monitoring.

Seventh, buy a tube processor such as the Drawmer 1960 to impart a classic analog warmth to your recordings pre-DAW.

Eighth, buy quality monitors such as the Genelecs or DynAudios.

Ninth, buy two or three computer monitors and get a current computer with plenty of RAM. I would suggest a Mac G5 running Logic.

Next, buy Waves effects processors and a convolution reverb program such as IR1.

Next, buy a producers desk to house all of the equipment.

Next, buy a comfortable chair (Aeron).

Buy quality sample CDs from the likes of ILIO.

AND FINALLY, hope to God you have any talent!

Vert, no problem, man, it's just that I'm exposed to stress everyday and I'm expecting everything to be negative, hehe, but no hard feelings against you; I'm here to get input from everybody so I can learn more and more everyday...and I don't mess with nobody. Etherium, sounds good, hehe, and yes, I do have a bit of talent, I just need time...practice makes perfect, and I don't have much time to practice...damn Army.

The $20,000 is including the cost of building the studio...a small one, nothing extreme...I think you guys get my point. Back home I have friends that are producers (not a bedroom hobbyist like me, hehe) and work making rhythms for rappers and singers...they're pros. No, the money isn't funded by the military; it's money that I've been saving instead of dumping it on drugs, alcohol or drinky girls
I just want the studio so I don't have to depend on availability, etc. since they're always working on projects. But I appreciate the input; thanks a lot. I'll post a little song I just made this morning and from the feedback I'll keep working on my skills (few, hehe)

okay first of all this is just my opinion in this whole matter, I'm not saying that I know the best in the subject...it's just what I would do with the money

well here goes

first off create a room with good acoustics (spelling?), it's the most important thing imo if you want your productions to sound really nice

second off don't start out with a massive rig of studiostuff, start simple.

Get a pro-tools system, digi-002 is a nice solution for anyone

next off get a descent synth that's a good allround, in other words get a Access virus C

then to the software-part, first off get the waves diamond bundle, has everything you need when it comes to effects

as for the computer, go for macintosh...it's really no question about wich OS that is the best for production

get a G5 with dual 1.8Ghz processors and lots of RAM

then to finish it up get a pair of really good monitors, I would suggest Adam, krk or Genelecs if you have the money for it (wich you obviously have )

so to sum it up:

Special made studioroom
Pro-tools system (Digi-002 works fins enough)
Access virus KC
Waves diamond bundle
Macintosh G5 dual 1,8Ghz Computer
Genelec, Adam or krk monitors

now I haven't said anything about external hardware effects like compressors and other effects and that's simply because I don't know much about them.
All I really know is that Neve does some really good shit when it comes to that stuff

I've heard of Protools but never used it...I'll download the demo and see how it is. Yes, I've been thinking of Genelecs, or Mackies...or Haflers. Right now I have a small setup in my room to start and learn, which is plenty enough to knock out great sounding tunes. I've heard many people in this website with much less than what I have and they are very professional sounding...it's the cook, not the kitchen, hehe. So yes, I'll be looking into that. I wish some of you guys would live close to me so you could come over and share some knowledge with me...it's better to see somebody do something than read on how to do it.

Heh, that's kind of like saying "I suggest a Porsche, a Ford and a Ferarri.

I wouldn't recommend KRKs. They are good for Rock, but not dance. They consistently get poor reviews.
