Right!!!......Adding a Sub to ur setup?!

Right fellas!

Basically iv been considering adding a Sub to my current setup, nothing too big and flash just something small to give me some nicer bass and kick drums. I dont want it to be 'too' loud as it cant be in the house really.

Anyhow my current Amplifier only has one set of speaker outputs. Will i need an Amp with 2 Speaker outputs to Add a Sub or is it done another way? if so...how?!!

Also if anyone wants to recommend some nice Subs, nothing too loud or flash but with quality in sound still there, and post some url's that wud be of great help!!!

Cheers Guys!

well what's your budget? The easiest and most likely the cheapest way to go is to get an active subwoofer, that is with an amp built in that way you don't have to worry about extra amp, bridging to mono, etc... Something like these:

brand new from JBL dual 12" active subwoofers around 650.00 usd.

Yamaha powered 15" on sale for 900.00 usd.

Samson powered 15" for 500.00 usd

Hope this helps a little...

Thanx for the reply but as nice as them babies look there probably a bit too pricey and big for what i had in mind!!

i was thinking more about the £100 - 150 mark (Not sure what that is in USD?!)

How does this active subwoofer work then? How do you set it up to work with my current amp (1 set of spkr channels)

thx again!

Got you, basically on an active subwoofer, you'd run the wires from your speakers to the subwoofer pos/neg in and then back out from subwoofer to the amp, sort of like a loop, unless your mixer has a separate bass output. How about something like this:

12" powered JBL with 400watt RMS amp built in? though the cost is $450.00 USD for something cheap, something like this perhaps:

BIC 12" down firing design with built in 200watt amp for $230.00USD

or

yamaha dual 8" with 200watt amp built in for $250.00 USD

or

10" Cerwin Vega with 100watt RMS Amp with cross over and subsonic filter on sale for $149.99USD

AudioSource Powered 12" with 150watt amp built in for $160.00 USD

are these more what you are looking for???

I am in a similier situation and I can share whatI have learned. I have BIC America bookshelf speaker that are great, but i hear that their subs are total shit. The looked at the AudioSource and i hear it is OK, but sounds much better if you add some sound insulation (foam) to the inside of the box. I hear really good things about the Acoustic Research active subs in this price range. I was thinking about getting the PS-108 or PS-112 (I think that is what they are called). I hear the new Acoustic Research subs are GREAT, but pricy (The PS series is a few years old).

Checkout this website for good speaker reviews (they are all consumer reviews so there is a lot to read and take everything with a grain of salt). www.audioreview.com

Are you sure about that?? I thought an 'active' subwoofer or 'active' speakers were just ones that include an amp of some kind, so all that needs doing, as far as wiring is concerned, is plug in your line-level signal (typically RCA)

Ok, Sorry confused you a bit. Active speaker, let's say active monitors, vs. Active Subwoofer, aren't the same. Active Monitors can be plugged via RCA(most of the time) cables from pre amp source such as a mixer or a dual cassette deck etc, and there are no pos/neg wires involved at all, BUT with an active subwoofer, or any subwoofer actually, there is no separate voice coil for mids and highs, only voice coils for woofer, so the mids and highs frequencies will need to get eliminated via a crossover, now if a pre amp source or your amplifier has a totally separate line out specifically marked subwoofer out, then the pre amp source or the amplifier has crossover built in already, if there isn't such a thing, then you must get an active subwoofer with crossover built in and it will have speakers pos/neg input and output to loop your regular speakers from your amplifying source(note not from pre amp as let's say your mixer will be connected to the amplifier via master out from mixer to inputs on amplifier), then speaker cable from amplifier to subwoofer speaker input and from subwoofer speaker output (which is now filtered out so that only bass stays in the subwoofer) to your main regular speakers. This is what an active subwoofer looks like with cross over built in>>>

This is the best possible pic I could find for now, but you see what I'm talking about pos/neg speakers input/output? This happens to be one of the high end ones, so it also has loop via rca cable in/out.
