Alesis monitors - Re Amplifier

DJ mart have a monitor package (here) that includes the unpowered alesis monitors and the crown amp shown at the link. The unpowered monitors by themselves go for 199 usd. DJ mart's package goes for 399 usd. The other option is to buy the active (powered) alesis monitors which are the same speaker, but with an amp in each speaker (retail for 399 usd).

So the question is, seeing as the package costs the same as the active alesis monitors (here), which would be the better buy? Or more to the point, which would be the better way to go regarding the amp? (since prices are the same for each option)

this is for you amp experts out there... would appreciate some feedback folks.

I am not sure about these particular speakers but normally when they have there own amp (and they are not monitors like this) the amp matches the speackers very well and is connected with good wire. Also the wire from amp to speaker is very short with may help with dealing with interference, but obvioulsy the input line is just as long so maybe it will not help.
In this case I think it depends, if you have a use for a nice power amp without the speakers (maybe you want to upgrade later, or use that amp if you are a mobile DJ or something) otherwise because they cost the same, I would get the powered monitors.

get the powered behringer's for $400. They sound better than the alesis monitors (even if it says it has a shallow bass response, it sounds great)...

behringers also have a switch on the back that lets you adjust them for your specific room type.

The M1's have been regarded as very very good monitors by many people and magazines that I've read. I have never listened to them personally, but a good friend of mine highly recommends them. He is a musician and an (amature) producer and does work for local bands in his area. Very good with sound and sound equipment etc.

On the recommendation of powered versus unpowered speakers, I would definetely go for powered if you plan on using them for bedroom use. If you are going to build a larger aray of equipment like a club set up would, then the unpowered speakers with an amp would make more sense. The main benifit behind unpowered is that you can choose which amp you want to put into your system etc. I don't believe that you can use powered and unpowered speakers in the same set up (though I could be wrong). So the main benifit of having unpowered speakers is that you can have a very large system revolving around one or more amps.

If you have powered speakers, you now have more versitle speakers for home use. You can connect them to any reciever and have them work because they are self-powered. Otherwise, if you don't have a reciever, then you will have to get one anyway, amp or not.

Another suggestion, as per the last post about the Behringers, is that "it sounds good" is always relative to the listener. Go to your local music shop, Mars music, Sam Ash, etc and listen to them yourself. That is truely the only way you will know if YOU like the sound.

Thanks for the replies people, some good advise and info there. I've pondered about whether I should get the Behringer Truths or the Alesis M1 actives for quite some time now... they are both what I have decided that I want to pay for monitors.... However, contrary to many pieces of advise, I haven't yet heard either or the monitors for myself. The Mars Music store near my place just shut down, so that sucks. San Antonio doesn't seem to cater very well to my needs either! I had just started looking for monitors when Mars Music finished it's close out sale too, which sucks a lot.

Anyway, much appreciated guys! I'll try and find a way to hear these before buying.
