The subject sez it all, folks: I've got an image (.GIF) I wanna put on a shirt. It's about 1.5 inches square, and I want to make it 6 inches square and avoid that blocky look. I'm a photoshop novice, how do I do it?

well... if you are gonna resize an image *4 wich you are... it will either get blocky, or blurry, at least with photoshop... there are advanced programs that are capable of doing this at pretty high levels... but they cost a heck of a lot... there is one though that i use for that and its at shortcut software and is called "S-Spline 2" ...

try finding it on kazaa or something...

Advanced programs (a la Magical Fractials) that claim to do a loss-less scale only work on very high-res pictures, and at that, expect a plausible result only when you downscale..

The fact remains: you cannot scale without losing information (which results in compensation, thus noise, etc), and no special algorithm or filter applied by "professional program" will help you in most cases...

Considering your souce image is incredibly low-res (and a gif to boot), unfortunatelly you are kinda out of luck ;(

yep, what ur doing is equalivalent to trying to make a poster out of postage stamp.

You could try converting your image from a rasterized one to a Vector based one.
Vector-based images can change to any size without loss of quality. BUt they usually are more basic, less detailed
