TWO TRIBES: MELBOURNE VERDICT!!!!

hey guys

i can't believe i am the first person to post a two trobes melbourne report. here is the one i posted on inthemix.com.au

My night started at 8:00 and we headed off to check out all the arenas. We stayed in the vodafone (godskitchen) and boogied to somes nexus, kaos and a bit of papa smurf. I thought all three did a good job of getting the night started banging. The 500 people in the arena to start off with grew larger. We left to check what else was happening.

We went to the rod laver (global underground) and heard a bit of nubreed. Personally i thought they were too mellow and went to the hardware room. We caught some Dee Dee & Slack who were very good and had the room loving every minute of it. The large room also made it quite comfortable and gave everyone enough room.

Then the shit hit the fan. The warp brothers were on between 11:30 and 1ish. as we made our way there, we noticed the ENORMOUS ques. When i asked one of the security how long it would be to get in, she replied 1 hour. 1 hour!! that meant completely missing out on the wap bros (which i missed there central energy tour last year).

so we thought we check out dave seaman after his excellent reviews from the sydney tt2003. Once again, another que with a door shut. everyone was cracking the shits by this stage. we listened to cromack and then made our way to see the man himself armin van buuren. the doors were shut at first but then they decided to let everyone go. when we got into the arena itself there was more security trying to fend everyone off. by this time, everyone had had enough. so people started to jump the little barriers they had. the security couldn't stop us and eventually let the barriers open.

what a set armin play. there was
james holden - nothing (93 rmx)
yahel - u feel
and i can't remember any more. it will come to me tho

after armin, tom harding came on. wasn't my cup of tea, and frankly who could follow up after armin?

all in all a good night.

Pauls Verdict:

The night couldnt have started off any worse, went to city pub for the TA meetup im not allowed in pub cause ive forgot my ID, so i have to come back home to pick up license.

We head in at around 10 o'clock and very interested to see the 5 wogs laying into this pommy yorkshire guy and demanding their money. Being distracted and not having my ticket cuase my couz screwed me around some dumb **** offers me one for $80 it doesnt hit me until about 2 mins later that its a fake lol Suprise Suprise the nite im having so far till then it doesnt scan, but the **** at door doesnt think twice about it and just lets me go through.

Absolute chokers, thats all i got to say by about 11pm the place was fucken packed 15mins for to get on the floor for GU arena, but in saying that i was mightily impressed by Dave Seaman, and later on Junkie XL.

Anywayz we were venturing to check out all the arenas lots of space in the house arena and techazz arena, and it was around 11:30 when we went to GK arena and there was a at least 20min wait. I thought nah fuck this so we caught more of seamen in his no. 10 Harry Kewell shirt, he ripped it i must admit.Mucked aroung until it was about 12:30 when I said lets head down to GK arena and get good spot. My fucking god. They locked the fucking place up cause apparently it was packed. Excuse me, but fuck the only reason i came to 2 tribes was for armin. Anyway i sulked for about 1/2 hour then went into the house rooom to catch some of the godfather of house Knuckles. This man was rocking. It was funky, sexy, suave it was just fucken darn right cool. I met Jah who came all the way from Perth 2 so big ups man and respect. Sorry man later on in nite i didnt come past arena, i had some issues to resolve lol

Its about 2:00aam when i get the message that the doors are open and Armin is tearing it apart. I got in there when he was playing GTR-Mistral even though it tok a good 10-15 mins to get in there. By the time i made it to front he was pumping out Universal Nation 2003. just ch00nage

Armin was nothing short of euphoric, his crowd interaction was immaculate, and my gurning was getting harder and harder. 2 highlights of the night for me were Born Slippy
[sings] Boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy [/sings]

and Venus Tiesto Remix, me and Nathan spotted it straight up it was a rocking track.

Big ups to all the TA's and there were plenty

Yeah, Philby was holding up a t-shirt a few times. I'll wait for him to tell you about what else he got from the great man...

Yeah, what a night. Got there early, about 7:30pm and caught the end of Mark James' set. Played a couple of good tracks and was immediately taken aback by the sound in the GU arena. Probably still the best sound setup I've seen at an event. Then headed over to GK to see Master Kaos bang out some anthems -- the Cosmic Gate remixes of Urban Train and Rank 1 - Awakening had me quite excited.

Then it was back outside to chilling near the ferris wheel, from where we made our journey back to GU for Nubreed at 10pm. One of the highlights of the night: smooth, energetic, local and live. Very nice indeed.

This was followed by Dave Seaman, who just about tore Rod Laver Arena a new roof. It was a banging progressive trance set, and a HELL of a lot of fun. Big thumbs up to the bald guy -- what a ripper. U2 - Staring at the Sun (Brothers in Rhythm Remix) was a highlight, as was the track he played when the lasers were turned on during the breakdown. Magical stuff.

Then over to GK, where we endured a hour long wait at the doors (locked), due to the arena being full. Apparently it took them that long to clear people after the Warp Brothers; Phil assures me it was packed.

Then in for the great man himself. We entered to the breakdown of Conjure One - Tears From The Moon (Tiesto Remix), and the fun just didn't stop. Viframa - Cristalle (Katana's Intro Mix), POS - Remember (which I wrongly ID'd as Sonorous - Protonic), 3 Fingers - Frozen February, and Solar Stone - Solar Coaster (Midway Remix) were my personal highlights. I've forgotten far too many other tracks, though there was a KILLER *OMFG* track that Stipsy thought may have been from Armin's album? I think there was a tracklisting being done, so hopefully we'll se it up soon

From there, it was outside, and then to see TA's own resident superstar trance DJ play at the recovery. Biggest crowd I've ever seen for a Strangis set (around 150-200), but your typical ZOS crowd: the muscle marys (clap clap) and the handbag trophy chicks were out in force. I suppose you can't have it all. Big thumbs up to Phil and Jolz for reprazenting along with me and Mikkaa at the recovery.

Right folks, that's about it. Gotta let my brain cool down. See you all in a few weeks at r00m on Friday March 21st, where Steve's headlining an all-local trance party.

I swear to god, if you did not see Dave Seaman then there is no hope for you. You might as well end it all right now.

Without a doubt the most beautiful set I have ever heard in my life. The last 20 minutes was a bit take or leave, but the rest was just one beautiful melodic prog track after another. I can remember one moment, during the build-up of Planet Funk - Who Said, where the lasers were going nuts, Dave Seaman was throwing his arms around on stage and literally everyone around me had their hands up in the air and then all exploded the second the beat kicked back in. It was just one of those once-in-life-time dance floor moments where you knew that everyone was on exactly the same wavelength as you. I turned to my mate about half way through and said "This is fucking magical" and he turns to me, shakes his head and said "I know, I want to dance but I can't. I'm hypnotised". Then towards the end, a guy standing next to me turned and said "This guy is bloody amazing" and I said "I know, I think I'm melting". It was mixed beautifully and the set structure flowed beautifully as well. Also saw some suprisingly good turntablism (scratching etc) from Dave on occasions. The laser guy also deserves the thumbs up because the laser in the GU room were bloody brilliant and suited the set perfectly. All in all, a 2 hour aural orgasm. He calls Melbourne his second home, so someone please move Dave Seaman down here. I'll personally pay for his accomodation.

Anyway, that was definately the highlight of the night for me, but the GU Room was going off all night. Caught the back end of Sean Quinn's set and it sounded like a bad one to miss. Not as driving as his normal sets but as uplifting as all-buggery. Then came Kasey Taylor. I was expecting his usual set full of dark progressive monsters, but he kinda set the trend for the rest of the night in the room with some lovely, spacey melodic stuff. In fact, the sets flowed really smoothly in that room all night. Every set kicked off where the last one left off, so you did feel like you were being taken on a journey of sorts. Spent about an hour in the techno room going nuts to Will-E-Tell (some of the turntablism in that room was off the hook, this guy included) and someone else before going off to see a bit of Nu-Breed (like someone else said, probably a bit too mellow) before my main man Dave Seaman.

We left that set completely emotionally drained, and spent the next hour and a bit just walking from room to room. Saw about 20 minutes of Frankie Knuckles, who was playing some smooth, sexy house music, but I wasn't really in the mood to tell you the truth. Saw some Junkie XL and he was pretty good, and he was certainly getting into it (what the fuck was he wearing though?). The room exploded when he dropped Beauty Never Fades, but my stomach was eating itself by this stage so we left to get something to eat.

Went to the techno room to see Speedy J, but nothing was happenning for about the first 10 minutes - and the sound seemed incredibly shite for some reason (it seemed to be all at the front) - so we decided to see Sander K and then come back to catch the end of Speedy J's set - but once I got onto Sander's dance-floor I just couldn't leave. Insanely dancable prog music on a distinctly housey tip, with that semi-melodic edge of his. He played My Lexicon about half way through, and that was yet another scrotum tingling moment. I don't think I stopped moving for the entire 90 minutes I was in there - this guy deserves his reputation.

Lost my friends at this point, and headed for Armin for the TA meet-up. Seemed suprisingly banging from what I heard, but even though I only caught the last hour, it didn't seem to compare to his GK set last year (which was brilliant). Trancilvania pointed out a few of you that I hadn't already met, but it was so fucking squashed that I didn't get the chance to introduce myself. Stayed there just long enough to get into the group photo (typical ) before I headed off with Trancilvania to find my mates and see the last 30 minutes of Slam. Completely lost him at this point (where did you go mate?) but Slam were pretty bloody good from what I saw. Truly gurn-worthy techno muzak. Stayed there until the end before I got dragged down to the GK arena again. Saw the last bit of Tom Harding who seemed alright (less cheesy than usual hard-trance music) before sitting out Jason Midro's set while my mates stayed on the dance-floor (my legs were shot at this point). Left at about 6.45 and fell into a talking-shit, sub-conscious state of mind (you all know the felling) before getting home and passing out.

All in all it was a good night, but it probably didn't compare to last years (though it's probably a bit unfair to compare seeing as last years was one of the best nights of my life). There must have been close to 20,000 there, way more than last year. I'm also suprised that so many of you had problems getting into the arenas. Maybe I'm just a blagger, but the only time I had to wait to get onto the dance-floor was for about 2 minutes just before Dave Seaman's set (understandably, the dance-floor was fucking chockers) and all the other times I just walked straight in without any problems.

Ah well. Same time next year?

OMG - Armin was absolutely amazing. He is truly a man at the peak of his career. Mixing was flawless, track selection superb. 20 hours of bus journeying was a small sacrifise for 3 hours of absolute euphoric bliss. We were all going absolutely nutz down the front! The venue was incredible btw, easily the best even I've ever been to.

It was great to meet/see all of you guys, especially those that we met up with us at the pub in the city. Between us, I think we IDed every single track bar 3. Big thanks to Joelene for writing them! BTW, big thumbs up to DJ Ballistic, coming all the way from Sydney. And nice to meet stipsy, philby, Euphoric@Aus, Hybrid Junkie, SQ-K, MasterYoda et al. You guys are all legends!

Inacoma, can you post the tracklisting for us please? In order, I can only remember up to about track 4...

01 Conjure One feat. Sinead O'Connor - Tears From The Moon (Hybrid's Twisted On The Terrace mix)
02 Scott Bond vs Solar Stone - 3rd Earth
03 James Holden & Julie Thomspon - Nothing (93 Returning remix)
04 Solar Stone - Solarcoaster (Midway remix)

mr_stamper should be posting the photos we took once they've been developed.
